@Omega, I am not sure if I am kinda anti-applebut I am thinking of alternatives. I know for fact iPod Touch is excellent at what it does. But I am sure there are other alternatives that are worth trying. I'll anyways have 15 days return policy should something go wrong. I read quite a few negative comments before I purchased N82. But I bought it, spend time on it and now I am sooper dooper satisfied with it. Sometimes you just need to give gadgets some time to get the things to work the way you want.

The touch can get to a similar amount of features like the n810 with the use of jailbreaking to allow you to install stuff that Apple doesn't want you to have. The touch can also do SIP calls and what not but you will need a headset that has a microphone (no built in mic on the touch).
The Nokia N810 has an internal GPS. Mine is a POS, YMMV. However, at least it can use my phone's GPS using BlueTooth and ExtGPS program on my phone. The iPod touch has no BlueTooth driver.
The iPod touch has Skyhook Wireless and Google Maps by default. You'll still need to preload the maps though. If Skyhook Wireless works well in your region it might work good enough instead of GPS. Depends on purpose.
You can get a GPS for the iPod touch but to get that hardware enabled you need to jailbreak. You can then preload google maps (the data; not the app) on the device and use an application similar in functionality to Maemo Mapper called xGPS. Except this application Just Works (tm) easily, with a user-friendly interface. I'm sure some folks will find it not hackable enough though.
I've modified my iPod in such extend that MobileSafari is very slick. It has an adblocker, and optionably plays Flash, for example. I really miss BlueTooth on it though. Its such a pity. Otherwise I could hook up a wireless keyboard (HID), stereo headphones (A2DP), use external GPS [mouse/phone], or use tethering. Now I use JoikuSpot on my phone.
My post compares a lot of the hardware features. You can use these together with figuring out which hardware you find important and which software you want to run.

Which brings me to another point: with which device will your brother combine the Nokia N810 with? Does he have 3G? Which features will compliment his phone? Or will he rather use the N810 indoor?
I haven't used my iPod touch during summer yet, but I don't think the screen will be very usable in sunlight because its glossy. Nokia N810 and Nokia E71 (especially with dark theme) seem better at that.
The SD mod for Nokia N810 by craves1 works very well. It transforms your miniSD into a full sized SD. It'll need an alternative back cover, and the device will be a bit thicker. You can also use the Mugen 3600 mA battery instead which comes with plastic back cover, not opting for alternative back cover by craves1. However it will make your device/initial_purchase more expensive.

My bro currently has N73. I am not sure if he would want to pair it with N810 for GPS. I was thinking of getting an external bluetooth GPS. Any suggestions on this? Use of N810 would be mostly indoors. Outdoors use primarily would be using it as GPS.
I won't go for craves1 mod. microSD --> miniSD 8GB class 4 will do just fine for now.

my BT GPS receiver is a Holux M1000 I bought it for about $35 a while ago on sale... maybe amazon can't remember.
it locks onto satellites everytime within a few seconds, and is very accurate.
It has a very good battery life, of several hours definitely >10 hours but not sure exactly how much cause I never go longer than that without recharging it. I would guess it's closer to 20 hours

By the way, CAUTION ON THE SANDISK 8GB MicroSD cards! A lot of users have had trouble with them with the stock miniSD adapters that come with. I think some of them used micro-to-mini adapters from other manufacturers with good results, but I would be cautious. I just bought my N810 this week, and also an 8GB Patriot MicroSD card which has worked without problem. It was cheap ($25 CDN) and as a bonus came with a miniSD and a SD adapter!
If you're interested, you can read up about the Sandisk cards at this thread.
One more thing: I have been using the N810 GPS without problems. I have found for myself that it is in fact quite satisfactory. I got a lock doing 120Km/h on a highway in Toronto recently and made a post about it here. You may want to try it out for yourself before deciding if you want to purchase a BT adapter.
My next purchase will undoubtedly be a foldable BT keyboard. For very casual use, I'd be able to do quite a lot on the N810 without having to lug around a laptop. Oh, and the battery life on this is quite good. For casual use (reading an ebook, or typing an email, etc), my power meter reads 7 hours of active use. When watching a 700mb dvdrip it reads about 4 hours. In stand-by it reads about 10 days!

LoadApplet - this applet is great because if something hangs you can just look at the list and kill the process without having to use the terminal
All these things except for easydebian require basically no tinkering, simply install from extras-devel repositories... very easy.

Yeah! hey we should compile a nice list of useful apps that work 100% and can be installed at the click of a button. Basically a list of must have apps that make the N8X0 worth using, without having to deal with the pains of too much tinkering/troubleshooting.
