There are some silly names that mean little in the wrong country.
What does the Satio and Aino mean to people in insular America?
And Rover, wasn't that a car? Or a dog?

It's tricky with naming conventions, I'm happy with just N900 myself I'd rather have the phone in my hand though.

I wonder why Playstation 2 and 3, Xbox360 were called as they are instead of evocative names like the Jet Game Machine etc

And Nokia decided to give the device the same name that the community was already using. Or maybe Nokia was going to call it that anyway, and decided that it was a nice thing to say.

Sorry, I wish I could remember more specifically who said this and in which video, but the phrase "named by the community" stuck in my mind and I'm quite sure about it.
If it's the same video I remember seeing (and I can't remember exactly which one either!) I thought he said something like "well done for guessing the name correctly". In other words, he wasn't saying that they decided to call in N900 just because the community was already calling it that. I know Nokia is opening up to the community with Maemo, but for naming I'm sure they have their own ideas about that.

I'm probably not people, but I only remember numbers - not names.

I'm not saying that we here on the maemo.org community need to see names.

I'm saying that those people out there who are in the market for things like iPhones and Android phones, they're the ones who could be won over by cool device names. We need to be winning those people over for Maemo to succeed.

i don't want to memorize or know dozens of product names by dozens of manufacturers. which is why i forget most of those names the second after i hear them

As I said above we don't have to have an either/or situation here, we could do a name AND number.

For example if they had called it the Nokia N900 Rover, those who prefer numbers could remember the N900 bit and those who prefer names could remember the Rover bit.

As long as there's a name there which is unique to a particular Maemo device or unique to the Maemo range, that's all I'm asking for.

They could always go the way of BMW and call the entire line of devices Maemo with single number designations for them. For example, instead of calling it an N900. It would be the Maemo 9.

That gives room for lower specs of devices, and as long as surnames don't get to ragged (Maemo 9s = good, Maemo 9 XpressMusic Edition = not good), then it could work.

that would create more confusion. ("what are you talking about? ah, the rover is also called n900? really?")

perhaps it's different in the states, but all the non-techie, average consumers i know over here don't need exciting, cool names for products to recognize them

A casual conversation..

Person A: I'm glad Moto finally released the Sholes, it's really cool!

Person B: I only want the Droid don't care about anything else.

Person C: What the hell are you two talking about? Motorola Milestone beats both of those!

Most proper device names are so embarrassing that I much prefer numbers. I like Nokia's system, since it at least lets you guess at the price range based on the prefix.

Names may work well when there's only a few named devices around, but when there are enough devices with "cool" names they start making even less sense than simple model numbers.

And yeah, most device names are not that cool anyway.

i dont like associating n900 with nseries b/c people think symbian and disaster, as nseries flagships since n95 8gb have been under powered and rife with problems, thankfully n86 as rescued that a bit with its flagship camera.
n900 project name Rover was named after a explorer not a car as some one stated, the next maemo device is named after a explorer also but I'm not at liberty to divulge that information
