I tried KMplayer, an linked to Mplayer, but how do you get vids to play in full screen? SiB is full screen and has info on it's UI controls.

Probably something silly I am missing on KMplayer?.....?

Yep, silly indeed- Double tap the video

BTW, there must be "some" acceleration already taking place, since some of the vids that choke on the default player or drop a lot of frames are smooth as butter on Mplayer. I can not see even the workhorse 3430 pulling this off without acceleration. These are higher bit rate avi and divx files.

One strange issue as far as using KMplayer or BiS as the GUI:

Some videos that play fine through BiS do not play using KMplayer as the GUI. I would have thought the GUI would make no difference on what plays. I checked and KM is set to Mplayer. Strange.

I have mplayer installed, and kmplayer too, and want to stream TV form my PC. The stream url in VLC (where it works well) looks like rtsp://XX.XX.XX.XX:XXXX/xxxxxxx.sdp The video codec is set to h264.
I see that the N900 connects to my PC, but the N900 screen stays black. P Do i need to change the video codec ?

I love the fact that i'll be able to use mplayer(along with perl) when i eventually get it, as i currently use to shuffle play my music with out playing too much from the artisits ive got way to many albums off. So i'll just be able to copy all my music across and my utility and i'll have a portable version of my Music system.

There is no support for rtsp in current mplayer port...

Just tried it with couple of files that were not working on default player. They work like a charm on Mplayer . The only issue I see is that there are no buttons in full screen...so you have to double tap in order to minimize the screen and then pause the video.

BiS allows controls using the keyboard- does KM? I prefer BiS since some vids do not play using KM, but work with BiS. Makes no sense to me, since using same player, but there you go

Again, seems no way there is not some form of acceleration taking place with Mplayer. For not being optimized, it kicks the default player's butt for smooth playback on higher bit rate files

Actually the version in extras-testing is optified, so it won't eat precious space on your tiny root partition.

Having said that, it is slow and there's no gui.

Do they still play "smooth as butter" when mplayer is fullscreen?

Yes, they do. Just as good as my Archos 5, which is the greatest portable video player on the planet (for now). Hard to believe the N900 has the potential of being better for media. Same great video playback on the N900, but far better sound quality from the 3.5mm jack

Archos also has component out and hi def, but point is the N900 plays the same vids I have tried, just as good on it's own display. Hi def on a 3.5" display is a tad overkill IMO.

BiS will do fine for a GUI until a better video solution is available on the N900. If the current codecs are not improved on the N900's default player / framework, I see no value for offline alone video playing, but appreciate the need when playing streaming media.
