I prefer pyGTKeditor over leafpad since it supports syntax highlighting which makes things more readable, it also supports portrait mode which is handy if you just want to view the files, as well as hildon autocomplete. the default language for syntax highlighting can be changed by clicking on the title toolbar and clicking on settings.
from the commandline you can access pygtkeditor in the same way as leafpad.

pygtkeditor /etc/xdg/menus/hildon.menu

then for syntax highlighting choose xml or something similar from default language and this will highlight the tags.. if it doesnt highlight the first time, reopen the file after the language change.

Lack of folder creation to place shortcuts does seem odd and was discussed a few months ago (I was the OP).

Right now, it is not as much an issue due to not a lot of apps, but that will change over the months. Maemo 5 needs the ability to create folders rather than spreading over four screens. Even then not enough space when apps start getting released.

I just installed that today since I am trying to learn python (since it will help automate alot of the brute calculations in excel and maybe to contribute to gpodder). I'll add your post to the compilation.

Be careful!
I managed to muck up the menu config and the n900 went into a continuous reboot loop.
I was only able to fix it by getting a suitable remote-shell command through the 1-second window before it rebooted again.
Is there any recovery mode (safe mode) on maemo? ie boot it without the GUI, so I can ssh in and repair it? Or x-term only if the networking is bad.

Could someone create a step buy step tutorial for this?
with a basic example, of the following
1 - Changing the position of an app
2 - Creating a folder
3 - removing a file.

I started getting confused reading this thread. As some screen shots of what the file looks like that you editting so we know that we not changing the wrong files.

Thanks in advance
Chris

Thanks guys.
I created a bunch of folders on the main menu so I don't need to scroll to find an app.
The hildon.menu now has just 7 basic apps and 6 folders.

Does that look reasonable? Of course I will need to edit it again every time "More..." fills up it's screen.

Again WARNING - do not try this unless you are comfortable with Linux, have a fresh backup (e.g. rsync), and a spare phone.

Adding more Menu sections will add folders (the one there represents the More..). Replace the OnlyUnallocated/ and All/ with a list of Filenames for the apps you want in the folder (see the files in /usr/share/applications/hildon).
What application are you guys using to edit this file?
I can't seem to open it from GPE file Manager

Sorry Chris, but there is no polite way to put this.
Don't muck with it or you will make it unbootable.
Both this and your previous post ask questions that were already clearly answered in the thread. The first post on this page (4) mentioned two editors. I suggest you wait for the GUI.
