Not really. All you need is to set the Contacts app as a shortcut on the desktop, press it in portrait and use the alphabetical sorters.

Sure, there's cruft, but there's actual apps that are useful there.
In all seriousness though, my experience is that Maemo is a better platform. Nevertheless, I await Nitdroid call-making-abilities eagerly. Hopefully, we'll be able to get Cyanogenmod on with it.

For 2, at least Safari doesn't regularly give me a blank page despite having loaded the page title... Unlike MicroB. :S
For 3, I like Tap Tap. No Tap Tap for Maemo, unfortunately. One day I might supplement my N900 with an iPod Touch.
