After getting my N900 replaced last weekend (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=331) I've now had over 7 days without a reboot or any other problem.

I've been following the bugzilla reports for bug 6334, and it seems like some people have found a work around by adjusting the power management options in the Maemo kernel. Based on my own experience, I remain convinced that this is a hardware (i.e poor QA) rather than software problem. This is re-inforced by the fact that lots of other things on my replacement seem to work 'better' than on the first one I had.

YMMV, of course, as they used to say on Usenet...

Well, Ican tell you that my device work much better also. Much more fluent screen etc, and I am simply doing the work around. As mentioned in another bug and thread, the rebooting messes up the PVR/SGX, making the system unstable. After ANY "warm" reboot, a cold reboot is recommended (turning off with the power button), as this will reset the SGX.

It certainly is hardware, as confirmed by the Nokia guy in the bug-thread. But, this is normal and simply a spread in HW specs that is not incorporated into the current driver. I mean, anyone who has done overclocking and been fiddling with wait states etc knows this.

Have faith, thatis my motto right now.

So, essentially, I initiated the replacement of my rebooting device for no damn reason?

Maybe, maybe not. I have done the same thing, but haven't sent mine in yet. With this fix, I easely go through a day without needing to recharge, so it has no practical consequenc for me. If this turns out to be unfixable in software, well then Nokia will HAVE to recall/fix them no matter what. If it is fixable in software, then no problem.

I bought mine on the internet, and right now it will take weeks, if not months to get a new one due to high demand and Christmas season. I see some stores will not get new supplies untill the mid of January. If I were in a position to just hand it over and get a new one right away, I would do it.

But, according to Nokia, this is likely to be fixed. They haven't given any promise, but they wouldn't do this in any case untill the fix is fully tested, and right now it is not. It is much more likely that this will be fixed, than not. Maybe not in the first FW update, but soon after. My experience with Nokia is that they allways deliver, but they seem to be in a habit of delivering a tad too early in most cases regarding high end devices. The N900 is no exception, and I believe that rightnow there is nothing fundamentally wrong with my device, that cannot be fixed in software.

So what should we expect? A software release that would make our corrupted phones work as fine as those that had no reboot issues?

I'm confused. If replacing my phone allows me to get a new one, with no reboot probs and better performances, why would i wait ages for a fix that would prevent the rebooting but won't make my phone as good as others?

You should read the bug-thread, but this is a snip from it where Aero Tamminen from Nokia answers this particular question:

We're hoping so, for the particular issue discussed here.
Let's see after testing the current fix candinate completes.


There may still be other reasons for 32wd_to reboots which are much more rare
(may e.g. happen in all devices, but only in some specific environment which
Nokia doesn't have). Those should be filed as separate bugs.

Well i'm participating the thread under the same id, but as i am a new user, i don't take nokia's team reactions as God's word and find difficult to know how much i can trust them, this is why i'd rather rely on experienced nokia's customers/users

(btw i'm french, so i'm sorry for my erratic english)

I firmly believe that this issue can and will be fixed in an upcoming firmware update.

There was a similar issue with certain Apple computers and OSX 10.5 when that first came out. 1 in maybe 20 or so people were experiencing kernel panics. I was one of them. Since it didn't happen to everyone, many thought that it was a hardware issue. Yet somehow it was fixed in an update.

I have faith that this is a similar issue, and will be fixed in no time.

Mine has rebooted from the start (MPD UK order, ordered 13th December),

Running "echo 0 > /sys/power/enable_off_mode" seems to have stopped the reboots, I'm going to wait for an update as opposed to sending it back.

Got mine replaced. And the new one is also rebooting, albeit slightly less often.

As the only thing common the the devices was my SIM-card, I cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol. It might have reduced the reboots, but hard to tell.
