Maybe you don't see it, but remember that we're still talking about a price advantage, and sales in markets where the even cheapest phones are considered very expensive.
In the west, budget phones have no appeal, I'll grant you that. But even in developing countries, most people despite the growing middle classes are still very poor.
There are phones that cost £30 without a contract. There won't be an android alternative to that for many winters yet.

Nokia have really lost their way, talk about getting into bed with the two worst tech companies on the planet, Microsoft and Oracle.
All that can come from this is a closed ecosystem with horrendous pricing, zero customer service and realms of infighting. Oh dear.
I was going to offer a purile comment to Specc and Lumiaman over the current stock about writing an app called iGloat but the fact is it just saddens me that a company with such a great past as Nokia has been reduced to begging for scraps.
Even if the spawn of Nokia/Microsoft/Oracle can compete and try to become the third ecosystem the best they can hope for is a small fraction of the iPhone market share and that closed ecosystem is already shrinking.
Too little too late and no innovation.

Loving this rumor about Microsoft planning to release their own WP8 phone. Is it just some institution shorting Nokia stock or a real plan? Either way, so nice that Nokia put all their eggs in the WP basket..

The new Ashas are not going to be £30, they are going to be around £65 before taxes, that makes them at least £80 in the UK.
My daughter just bought a new Galaxy Europa for £40 from 3 and she paid them another £15 to get an unlock code.
I think you'll actually find budget smartphones are a significant percentage of sales in the west, according to Kantar Worldpanel most growth in European sales of WPx devices is down to the NOKIA 610 not the higher end devices.
When I Iook around my friends, family and work colleagues the ones that aren't really interested in smartphones have devices such as the Galaxy Europa, Galaxy Ace, Desire C, etc...

The Galaxy i5500 is, as far as the local pricewatch can tell me, a £80 phone, not a £40 phone. So, 3 has a low fee to break a contract - that's really not relevant to the actual price of the phone.
