Is Nokia's pain Apple's gain?
Apple has managed to clinch the number one position in the Q2 global smartphone market as Nokia's shipments declined to 16.7 million units, down from 24.2 million in the previous quarter.

According to IHS, Nokia posted the "worst performance" amongst leading smartphone brands in Q2 2011 as it faced fierce competition from Apple, Samsung and HTC.

"With the announcement of the transition in early 2011, Nokia eliminated any incentive for consumers and developers to buy into its existing smartphone products, which are based on its Symbian and MeeGo operating systems," said Teng.

The Smartphone Wars: Nokia’s Suicide Note
All the old reasons a WP7 commitment was a bad idea remain problems under the new order. WP7 has bombed in its first quarter; there’s actual evidence that it’s not competitive. This means that the alliance does nothing to address Nokia’s historic weakness in the North American market. Then, too, it’s going to take time to get WP7 to market on Nokia hardware; one of their press releases describes 2011 and 2012 as “transition years”, a pretty strong hint that Nokia thinks both business units will have to struggle through a valley of death and shrinking Symbian sales before the new plan starts to bear fruit.

(Would an Android port take less time? Yes. Judging by current product cycle times for Android handsets, port time for the handset makers has to be bounded above by 90 days. My bet is that Android port time is actually down to two weeks and change. History matters; the Android codebase is designed to be ported in ways Microsoft is probably culturally incapable of even imagining.)

How WP7 is any different?
Android was peeing in pants because it'd give Nokia a short term benefit but long term negative because they'd switch to an OS where they had no real influence.

WP7 is pouring gasoline on the platform you stand, then lighting fire on it without having a rescue boat ready. Nokia realized their boat were sinking some time in the future so they bombed it, throwing passengers and sailors alike into the cold waters, with no hope for short term rescue. And again, they'd switch to an OS where they had no real influence.

That's how WP7 is different.

Bounced up from a new low at $ 5.28 today.

The new Nokia WP7 phone is rumoured to save the same WP7 OS as any other WP7 phone, how is that different from Android? Just more bull from Elop.

If Nokia do ever have any influence over M$ in the future by then nobody will care anyway, if iOS & Android keep on increasing market share as they are at present.

The only reason I haven't counted Microsoft out yet for WP7 is because they've at least shown they are somewhat competent in competing on the game console front. So for specialized experiences (as oppose to general) it seems they do decently. That being said it's still too early to get a WP7 phone for me (XBOX integration wasn't as I thought) and I still haven't found out if it can do things like tasker can for android.

Nokia stock on the other hand I have no idea. Even if they make good hardware, is that really enough to differentiate themselves from say HTC and other future WP7 makers? But on the other hand with stock being so cheap if it ever goes back to even a decent selling price you could make a boatload. Is it even possible that Nokia could eventually pull an Apple and turn the ship around?

Depends on the licensing terms with Microsoft...but assuming they are in a much more favorable position than they would be in with using android

With Android, they would have to pay $15 per device to MS. With WP7 they will just have to pay $14.99.

The thing is that with Android, some people would actually want it.
