e, e, for extras,erase is suboptimal! you easily bounce 'e' key. Make that anything different. I'd even suggest to have only UPERCASE command keys in extras menu, so you need to hold shift to 'confirm' you meant to do that.

Just so you guys know, I'm not going to be developing for a little bit - The right ~250px of my n900's screen is cracked and full of nice colorful lines, and I'm not going to be doing a bunch of work until I get a replacement installed. Also, I've got some non-maemo projects I'm working on...

Well, you can -try- to restore it the old way, but you may end up with an unbootable device that needs a reflash.
Or, you can try to mount the images. The optfs is just a EXT2 image; it can be mounted easily on any linux system with a couple commands(mount -o loopback..... for a start)
The RootFS is a bit harder; I haven't done it myself. But, your customizations should mostly be in the OptFS, so...
