That seems like a silly design of google's part then, since the web page version provides VOIP support. What was all the bruhaha about google voice bypassing the carrier (on iphone)? I figured it was acting as one of those hated (by the phone carriers) VOIP clients.
Well, IP texting is nice at least, and I could see pairing this with another SIP or VOIP provider, just to keep everything centralized to one number.

DIalcentral and TOR provide the exact same VOIP support as the website. Now that we got that out, I'm curious why you think otherwise., That I think is the central problem.

I think Fox5 thinks that the VOIP support from the website means receiving or taking calls from the website.
The only thing that the GV website (and the GV clients) do is allow you to direct your calls to your landline, mobile, work phone, SIP client, Skype, etc..

Ha, I was wrong, I had never actually placed a phone call with Google Voice (only texts) so I wasn't sure how it functioned, I just assumed.
So would the ideal setup look like:
Google Voice forwards to SIP/VOIP service rings on N900 if internet available, forwards to N900 phone number otherwise?
What number do outgoing phone calls from google voice show up as? The GV number? What if no data connection is available? I believe GV provides a way to dial into it, can TOR do that?
Most likely if I went down this path, I'd get a sidekick plan, and just pay the $1 per day for data if I needed to make a call while away from wifi.

When you dial through GV, your GV number appears on caller id. If you call your GV number from a callback phone, the menus let you dial out with your caller id number.
What I do is have T Mobile's Total Internet plan. For $40/month I get unlimited data (technically they might throttle at 10 GB a month). I do all my calls through SIP or Skype. The few times I'm not in Wifi or 3G coverage I have a prepaid phone I use.

epage, have to say you've been doing awesome work, now that I finally have cellular data service I might not use it quite as much for the SMS side, but I will definitely use it for the Google Voice calling. Is there a setting to have it never check for SMS messages since I'll handle those with SMS messages from GV directly to the phone now instead of through the app?
And as far as reliability, I think TheOneRing is tops, though one kind of strange thing did happen, I use ActMan (the Desktop Activity Manager) which lets you set "activities" like Home/Car/Work and store different widgets/shortcuts/contacts/bookmarks on the desktop. When I switched between two profiles, the one I hadn't used for a couple days, then TheOneRing went out and (re)fetched all the old SMS messages I had received in those couple days. Is this simply Conversations doing that work because it doesn't cache the messages on disk to share between profiles or does TOR not have its own store of messages/timestamps it has retrieved?
