Back in the days of CompuServe, GEnie and AOL with their walled gardens and limited access to the wider Internet, this was probably an accurate marketing description.

Today...the usage of "unlimited" by current ISPs and wireless telcoms borders fraudulent. And I mean on the other side of the border.

Back on topic. I found the WiFi to be a major battery drain. My phone would drain 40-50% over night, sitting in an area with lots of hotspots and a wifi link to one. Using the WiFi Switcher app has fixed that for me.

I've taken to disconnecting the Internet connections totally at night, otherwise I'll end up with Skype spam in the middle of the night and the alert wakes me up.

I don't leave it on at all, I only switch to it manually in fact. The signal strength where I am is so bad that it just ends up switching every few minutes which'd really hammer battery alas.

As for data usage, I don't think I'd trust it on 3G checking emails as there is so little control over what the email client downloads - it seems to automatically just download attachments and I tend to get some pretty big ones each day. It's pretty poor that my N95 worked better for things like this... I just hope it's sorted in the new firmware!

I just checked my useage... about 30 minutes of talk time and 500MB of data last month. I leave 3G on all the time, but most areas near me are still 2.5G. Much of the time I'm near a supplemental power source like the car or a laptop, so I don't worry much about power consumption. The big power drain is when I'm in a fringe reception area when the radio constantly tries to connect, goes out and tries again and again. For whatever reason that really slams the battery.

Yeah, location absolutely will heavily affect battery life. That applies to both data and voice connections. Many users don't think about that when considering why the battery drains quickly.
