You can also backup to a storage card (I use a card - you can pull it out before flashing if you really want to embrace your inner paranoid)

I have backed up/restored countless times using the flawless backup app. It just works.
I've found the backup now, on the phone, using "PC suite mode" at Nokia Phone Browser\N900 (PC-Suite Mode)\Data\backups\Backup\

Running MSCONFIG I find that it has installed "Nokia M Platform" under startup and Nokia service layer under services. - even though it no longer displays an icon on the taskbar.

As an addendum and only partially related to the problems of the OP: Vista was a mistake Microsoft tried to correct by releasing 7 as fast as they could. I used Vista for only a couple of months, and would like to forget about it. I do not know whether Vista has the following option or not, but in Windows 7, you can right click on any program's icon and select Troubleshoot Compatibility from the menu that comes up to ensure that Windows 7 runs it as a different version of Windows would. As the version it was designed for would. If you use that, the Nokia Suite works very well indeed under Windows 7. I installed it that way, I do not know whether more recent versions even require this to be done.

Instead of the inflammatory title you chose for your thread, I suggest renaming it to something more accurate, like: "Help! New user trying to find out how to use this device properly!"

Previous posts proved YOUR problems lie with the user and not with the device. I hope you acknowledge that fact by removing your unmerited complaints from this forum, because titles like the one you chose for your post can be discouraging.
I expect simple software such as the latest version of Nokia PC suite to run on Windows in the same way as a previous version did - without hitches. Finding that it doesn't may make me "disagreeable".

I can't click on the program's icon after this install of PC suite because it no longer has an icon on the taskbar! The functionality to make the software run on boot appears to be installed (please see my earlier posting).

I am going to un-ininstall and re-install PC suite to see if it makes any difference.

I have other machines with Windows 7 (and other operating systems - Fedora), but I am travelling at the moment and am stuck with a machine that runs Vista. And it should work!

I un-installed all the Nokia software on my PC, re-booted, and installed a fresh copy of PC suite.

The stuff I un-installed during this process included:

Nokia ovi suite
Connectivity cable driver
Ovi suite software updater
Nokia software updater

After installing PC suite, and re-booting again, I can see the icon for PC suite on the taskbar.

Points arising: the instructions should presumably say "un-install" all Nokia software before updating.

I connected the phone via USB cable, and on my PC I can see my contacts and calendar directly from the N900, when I attempt to do a backup of the phone's status, the PC suite software says "No phones connected connect your phone now" - which is totally illogical. (because I wouldn't be able to see my contacts from the phone if my phone connection wasn't working).

Simple Nokia software, running on a bog standard 32 bit software platform, not working.

I absolutely agree with you there lol because Mikeallen does stretch everyone's patience somewhat lol.
Seems to me he is finally reading the manual and advice given on here but he does not seem to heed a lot lol.
I got to say though i have never before seen such a problematic device from the Nokia stable as this one lol but if only he would just comply with some of the advice given it would be problems solved done finished by now.
Mikeallen the people trying to help you on here are very much dedicated users of the N900 and the problems your having are very BASIC issues well documented on here so it is indeed worth digging up as much info as your time will allow from this forum and you might even get to enjoy the wonderful experience of screwing up your device and being able to put it right again in a flash (pardon the pun lol).
Your making it hard work for yourself trying to argue.
10 out of 10 for everyone's patience lol.

Please don't destroy Nokia! At least let them release PR 1.2 first.
