Each would have data counters for that network and if there is not enough network activity for 3G, connection would be set to 2G and after that disconnected if the 2G counter is not exceeded. This would be really usefull since most of the day my N900 is unused but always online because of IM. If the phone is not really used for web surfing etc, 2G connection would be more than enough.
Also I would like to second this idea, IM can be left on 2g all day but there is just no need for 3g, perhaps it could swap from dual or 3g to 2g but still maintain the connection if IM is active?

Yep, IM works perfectly with 2G.

You may want to check out the "3G/2G/Dual Mode Selection Applet". It is quite convenient way to manually select the network.

Is this app compatible with the 3G/2G/Dual Mode Selection Applet?

I have both installed and on AutoDisconnect I have the following settings: when active [always], auto-switch 2G/3G [Dual - switch lasts 4"]. I have the 3G/2G/Dual Mode Selection Applet set to GSM.

I expect the behaviour to be that AutoDisconnect switches to 3G mode when an internet connection is required. However, it seems the phone remains in 2G mode.

It seems the 3G/2G/Dual Mode Selection Applet is over-riding the auto-switcher function of AutoDisconnect. Should I therefore only use AutoDisconnect, or does anyone have a way around this?

@Mushin

I have recently noticed a very similar problem, the app used to switch to dual and then connect to the network however since the last update I find it more than often sticks to 2g mode and connects... I have my one set to Dual-switch lasts 13" I think it was 14" but I changed it see if this would help...

It seems to do it when I am trying to use the media player and play internet radio, for some reason it also randonly connects to mms connection instead of web n walk...

Also, my emails don't seem to be autoupdating, I'v had a look into this and it appears there is a bug reported but im sure it was working a few weeks ago...? I have to manually start a connection and then manual update, am i just going crazy?

This feature would be nice for travelling in a train or in other bad connection situations.
I have added it to the BugTracker: https://garage.maemo.org/tracker/ind...1353&atid=5019

I hope it will be possible to implement because this case happened often in the last time and it is nearly impossible to connect in those situations because AutoDisconnect overrides my Dual mode selection on connection attempt. I have to disable AutoDisconnect in those areas because of this missing feature.
Would be really nice to see it included

Another suggestion would be that if autodisconnect has switched to dual for a connection as normal but the only thing running is an IM account then it switches to 2g only, no point having 3g for IM.

Hi DaSilva.

Just use the switch to Dual Mode instead of the 3G Mode in AutoDisconnect settings, it will resolve your problem.

Cheers

I know but at the same time it will cost more time to connect and it is not needed in the most situations.

Hello Calvin,

Iv'e been the owner of the N900 for about 5 months or so, I was aware of the existence of AutoDisconnect, but diminished it's capabilities.

A few days I decided to install it just for fun using the Faster Application Manager, I am glad to say I was wrong.

AutoDisconnect is a great app, it works great, and my phone now lasts about 4 days, it used to last about 20 hours.

Some feedback :
  • The 3G Switch Lasts X" Feature needs some clarification in the WIKI, I don't fully understand what it does, but I do know that opening a browser when the phone is on 2G, will fail if I put this setting on 2, and will work if I put it on 5.
  • Other then that, No bad stuff It's working very well, notifications are also fun.
  • Things I'd like to see implemented, if you decide you want to obviously :
  • 1. Switch to 3G if phone is connected to headphones jack / charger / usb - Why? When I use my phone in my car, 2G gives me that annoying GSM buzz on my car radio system, 3G doesn't.
  • 2. Keep a log of every connection establishment and disconnection initiated by AutoDisconnect for lets say the last week, this would be very nice to know how many times the phone accessed the net.

Cheers for the amazing app,
Eitam.
