Interesting.

First, Jerz did not get his device as part of the 300 Summit devices. I'm not sure how he got his device; I don't remember him saying, actually. Perhaps Eldar gave him his one. That would explain the covert SMS messages!

Secondly, his story makes no sense. The crash reporter activated in most of the N900's earlier firmware builds sends data via the Internet, not SMS. The data being sent can easily be a megabyte or more, so SMS doesn't make any sense as a method to send reports.

Thirdly, covert SMS messages that leave no trace on the device is not a very Maemo Devices thing to do.

So I think there are three choices here, listed in order of likelihood: (1) The N900 didn't send any secret SMS messages at all, and Jerz is getting scammed by an identity thief or his carrier, (2) Jerz got an illegal device which had a "bug" or "tracer" put in it to track its location, or (3) Jerz' N900 was the first Maemo 5 device "in the wild" to get infected with a trojan!

Or the device had a random build of software with some developer debug code in it. The code might simply have been sending status reports for test purposes and not be related to the crash reporter or any other feature.

That is also a possibility; it is a variant of (2) in my list, that he got an illegal / illicit device with firmware never intended to go outside the walls of Nokia. Reading through that entire thread, several comments Jerz makes suggests that this is probably what happened.

I love how with the creation of the internet came the wave of lacking to cite your sources. All respects to the owners and creators of sites like those but now I've realized that half of these places with "phone news" are just trash sites trying to rake in users for their google advertisements.

DOWN WITH THE INTERNET!
