Loving the device so far even with the random re-boots and horrible battery life. Quick question how do I make the phone app start when I make device portrait oriented? did not see anything on the setting.

  1. Launch the phone application.
  2. Tap the top bar to open the menu.
  3. In the menu that opens, tap "Turning control".
  4. In the dialog that opens, tap check "Launch by turning"
  5. Tap the "Save" button.

I have been using this device since last night and i think i have a good idea of the phone.

Just for reference I am coming from the G1 so i will probably compare it to that a couple of times.
HARDWARE:
First off the deice is beautiful.
I have spent a lot of time just looking at the device.
Buttons are solid and have good travel.
The keyboard took awhile to get used to but after you use it foir awhile it is very comfortable.(I have big hamds for reference)
The slider mechanism is solid and snaps into place. I like how there is no spring mechanism because those wear out.
The camera slider slides smoothly and does not touch or rub on the lens or on anything else.

SIZE.
Again remember i have big hands so it could vary.
The device is a perfect size for me. It fits well in my hand. Also it has some heft to it and i like that. Makes you feel like you are holding a 600 dollar device. I think it fits better in my pocket than my G1. I like bigger devices soo, but i know bulky. Sidekick lx 2009 ks bulky and this is no whernear tha size.

SCREEN:
Im coming from a capacitive so here it is.
The screen is far superior to any resistive screens I have ever used. It only needs slight pressure for it to respond. I have no complaints with the screen and that was my main worry. I have fallen in love with the stylus.
Oh man, i havent mentioned how stunning it iswhen it is on. Videos have great color and dark blacks.
The size of the screen is perfect, not too big, not too small.

SOFTWARE
First off it is very polished OS. After about an hour I got a hang of the menus. After i got familiar with it, i loved it. I was a big Android fan and I have completly forgot about it. Settings are easy to access and are finger friendly. Broswer is amazing. Sometimes it takes a little long to load but when it does it looks just like it does on a desktop. MULTITASKING is the maun reason why i spent so much money on this device and it has not dissapointed.
One thing I really miss is portrate mode. But, the positives outweigh the negatives in software.

SPEED
Its Fast, Talladega Fast. Lol
on a serious note it is a huge jump in performance from my G1.UI is snappy and responsive.

Man im getting tired....
over all i am very pleased with the device and I cant wait for future updates.
Well said, EXACTLY what i want to say. Luckily i cancelled mine from Amazon eventhough preordered on the 7th of Nov. and order somewhere else and got mine 2day; It's supposed to come 2morrow but fedex rules and deliver to me 2day.
It's SSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO COOOOOLLLLL. I LOVE IT.

First post on talk.maemo and its straight from my brand new n900 .
The hardware is just great, and i havent yet been hit by any of the issues people have been talking about. Bright and wonderful screen.. gmail setup went just fine over it. It is pretty slow when it loads up and i hope a fix for that is coming in.
Internet radio works great ootb.
Skype calling and integration is just perfect, i wish they would start supporting dtmf tones over skype as well but its not something i can hold against maemo or nokia.
keyboard is a pain for now, but thats something i guess will grow on you after time..
one niggle was with the wlan connection, the connection was added the minute the device was up and running, but within a few hrs inactive, the browser would not load pages, the mail client is still working though, just the browser tossing 404 for sites like google. I had to reconnect to the wlan to get it up and running again. Has anyone else seen this happen?
All in all it is a great device, and the phone works well too.
Just hope that they do bring portrait mode to more than the browser would make it a real sweet piece then.

How about this.

How fast is the N900 browser compared to a normal sized laptop (Say a dual core) using the same wlan connection/line?

The N900 is probably slower, but by how much?

On my iMac Vs N900
Open dabr.co.uk 1sec, 2sec
Open slashdot 1 sec, 3 sec

these are very rough times done using my eye and mental timings.
My experience has been that the N900 browser speed is more down more to how much JavaScript is on the page (more=slower pages). But it can cope with *every* website (Facebook is slow and painful, but that could just be Facebook )

Nokia isn't prone to those type of specific statements, but if they're planning all that stuff, and if they are true to the statements Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo made to the financial community today that "we will execute," well, then they can only stand to gain by clearly mapping out what I as a consumer can expect in terms of updates.

BTW I find this thread excellent for showing the potential and what's possible with the N900 in terms of it being a mobile computer. Still, I think it could be merged with other similar threads.
It is not just Nokia, I can't think of ANY public profit making company that makes anything more than vaugue statements about what is upcoming or when.

The thing about all of the "missing" features is that each one of those presents the market with an opportunity to build and SELL an application to do that (whilst being aware that some future version of Maemo may include that feature by default).
The good thing is that almost all of the code for the Maemo platform is available for potential developers to look at, which makes debugging *much* easier. My understanding is that the bits that are not open, are wrapped around specific hardware, and have API's available.

Does anyone know why in the media player for songs that are from a compilation it shows the album artist (various artists) as opposed to the song artist and does anyone know how to fix this very very annoying problem.
