WOW, did not expect this many responses from a simple question...

Since I started, the thread, let me say/clarify a few things...

I guess the reason why I was looking to go back to what I had instead of waiting to fix the firmware is because I really loved the device before this happened.

BUT I do not blame Nokia or the firmware. I had chosen the N900 violating my long time policy of never buying generation 1 of any product... And I loved it... (until the firmware upgrade)

HOWEVER, I believe that the firmware would work with a vanilla installation. I had installed apps from extras and that most likely is the cause... Still, I'm not complaining because this is still Gen 1 and growing pains are expected... So, wanted to take the easy way out and reflash it to the old firmware but guessed it is not possible

Just have to wait I guess...

NB: Least folks think otherwise, I do not work for Nokia and I paid good money for the N900...

Yeah, give Nokia a little time to sort through this. Frankly I'm amazed how quickly they're churning out code and fixes.

I know it sucks having a bad update... I, like many here I'm sure, deal with it all the time using debian/unstable.

This is a cutting edge, fantastically complicated brand new device running a new OS.

...and here I'm still waiting for mine to arrive in a little fedex box.

The device, is or rather was, fantastic. I did not buy the N900 just to watch videos, or listen to music or just to make calls. I bought it for all of those reasons and more.

This has been a strange week. The first small update was great, more features, improved browser, and loads of apps to download.

The PR1.1 update has now made my N900 worse than the day I bought it in early December

Things that no longer work (and were fine before this release)or are problematic:-
Videos no longer play, those that do require a reboot to work.
Pictures fragmenting in the picture viewer.
Music not appear in media player, requiring a restart of media player.
Shuffle all songs mode now way to slow, up to 20 secs before next song will play.
Unexpected re-boots.
Volume control problems with media player.
Battery life of 6 hrs if I am connected to my home wi fi.

It is not all doom and gloom as the device is faster and the browser better but the above issues nearly render it virtually useless.

This might not be a very useful post to this discussion, but I think it's worth mentioning I have none of the issues listed above. I've been on wifi over 16 hours and actively fiddling online for 5. Battery at 58%.

There wasn't much in that first update; any real benefits were almost certainly placebo.

As GeneralAntilles has said, the community testers who had access to 2.2009.51-1 found it almost entirely positive, without any of the issues you're reporting. My battery lasts longer, media player is more responsive (and "Shuffle all songs" is the only audio feature I use, pretty much) and 0 unexpected reboots.

GeneralAntilles' hypothesis that because we all reflashed there might be problems with the MU for you deserves further investigation. Did you reflash or use Maemo Update (aka SSU) within Application Manager?

Could you try a reflash and see if that solves your problems?

Jesus Christ, if it's not working correctly then reflash it. Use the guide here and get the FW marked as "second release" and the correct geographic area from tablets-dev.

So, Nokia has never given a beta firmware out to people to test and you are complained because this didn't work ?
And it didn't work because there are still bugs?

Could you now tell me which software (that has beta testers, or even where beta testing is available [like Firefox]) arrives at its final stable release WITHOUT any bugs?

Could you make this very statement you just made to Windows 7 (where millions tested), to Firefox 3.5 (where millions tested) ?

Where do you see the joke in how Nokia approached this time?
Could you tell me, also, which other mobile company gives out beta releases to regular users to test?
Does Apple do that? I think you pay there.
Does Android do that? I don't think I've ever seen an Android beta FIRMWARE out there.
Does Palm do that?
Does Microsoft do that ?

Nokia does. Today for the first time they do. They are investigating this option.. I really don't see it a joke.

I really don't see where's Nokia's fault here.
ALL the upgrade to ALL the software out there (Linux OSes, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora etc etc etc) DO have issues with their final supposedly STABLE release even AFTER "MILLIONS" of people have TESTED that release.

Please...

Ok. No when you listed your problems it looks like your device is serously smashed. Do not know why, but i would recommend total reflash N900 rootfs and emmc. My wild guess would be that your file system is corrupted.

According to that guide you should first flash your emmc and after that flash your n900 rootfs. I personally would probably go to nokia support :|

Problem might be that people have paid quite a lot money for this device and in this kind of sitsuation it´s bit different thant for example in firefoxs case.

I think this is wonderful but one thing that they should had done would have been option to downgrade back to old firmware. Or at least HUGE warnings about this.

I don't get how it can't be understood that will never exist a bug free software and even if the device is the same in everyone's hands, it doesn't mean the upgrade will be glitch-free for everyone.

Moreover, Nokia does allow downgrade.
It's only that this firmware upgrade includes something that can't be downgraded... it's pretty normal and happens with all the phones makers out there.

Simply put, people should open their eyes before opening their mouth.

And I would have written the same if this was a "Sony-Ericsson, Motorola, Apple and so on"'s phone forum.

And I am sure there are very similar comments over there as well...
