Hey I'm new to the forum. Just bought a N900 a couple weeks ago. I've been reading on the forum for a little while trying to learn all I can from all the gifted owners of this device!

I am posting because I am quite stuck. I recently purchased an 8gb micro sd and the n900 does not recognize it. I have read about the back cover having to be on and mine is....I also have the kickstand magnet in place and everything is ok there.

In x-term I ran dmesg and I get:

mmc0: cover is closed, card is now accessible

...as if it recognizes that the card is in there....

But I can't find the card anywhere in the device. File directory, memory info in settings....I just can't figure it out.

I have tried another card and I am getting more of the same. I'm just really trying all my options before claiming it as defective.

Everything else on the N900 works perfectly (really love the FM transmitter!)

If anyone can help me I would very much appreciate it and big kudos! Thank you!

p.s. If this is in the wrong forum I'm sorry, I just saw n900 and thought it would be relevant....and thank you guys for all the other tips and tricks I have learned from the boards! Thank you again!

kind of an noob-level question, but by chance do you have the device plugged in via usb to your computer? if you are in mass storage mode, you will not see files under file manager.

reboot usually solves mounting issues with the SD card.

What filesystem is it formatted in? I believe it will only show in the file manager if it's FAT.

It's located in /dev/mmcblk1 or /media/mmc1 (or something like that.)

Welcome, wunderbread33.

If you can't see the memory card from File Manager, you should be able to see it from Windows or Linux if the N900 is plugged in to a PC via usb.

From xterm, it would be in /media/mmc1

Thanks for the replies guys.

Now lets see...it isn't plugged in but the last time I did plug it in I did use mass storage mode. I have rebooted with a battery pull since then.

I put it in an xp netbook yesterday and formatted to Fat32. That was one of two options it gave me....the other was not Fat.

And to conclude so far when I put /media/mmc1 into x-term...it gives me this

/media/mmc1: Permission denied

Any ideas?

Thanks again for the responses! And thank you for the welcome!

Anyone with any ideas? Anyone know why it would say permission denied?

have you installed rootsh?

if not go into repositories, install rootsh.
then open xterm and type 'root' before the command above

hope this helps

Forget the advice you got above, though installing rootsh is a perfectly good thing to do.

If you want to go onto your card, you would type cd /media/mmc1

But why do you want to do that? Can you see the card from file manager?

By the way, Kevstacey, have you tried typing in
/media/mmc1 from an xterm? What did you get?

That's why I said to ignore your advice.

It does show up in the default file manager even if it's formatted NTFS(probably other fs too), although it gives an error msg that the file system is not supported.

I would say check if you inserted the card correctly and reboot N900 then see if it works fine. (removing cover will unmount the memory card so try to keep cover on while testing)

Sometimes upon leaving mass storage mode N900 does not(can't) mount memory card, although it's very rare, but happens. In this case a reboot will sove the issue.

PS: Welcome to the light side
