But I'd rather find more about this to be able to make a proper fix/workaround than uninstall packages blindly.
So the other DT packages should work fine with the previous kernel? Packages can be reinstalled for testing but its a good to know how to get a working system for when you need to use the tablet.

That appears to work fine.

BTW
wy don't you make status bar applet more useful? Now it is just a button, but it can tell you some info instead. Battery charge or cpu/memory or so...

Then let's try delayed startup as workaround for the mce (alarmd??) bug.
Keep alarmd disabled at boot.
Put this script uncompressed in /etc/init.d and make it executable ("chmod +x /etc/init.d/delayed-alarmd")
Activate it at boot ("update-rc.d delayed-alarmd start 99 2 3 4 5")

This startup script will start alarmd with a 1 minute delay, hopefully the boot process will have finished by then and it'll work just like when you did it by hand. If it doesn't work, we can try with a 2 minute delay (just edit the script and change "sleep 60" to "sleep 120")

You have to choose with advanced-systemui-settings if you want a simple button or a battery meter:
Run advanced-systemui-settings, press the "Battery" labeled button, check "statusbar applet shows battery status", close advanced-systemui-settings

Packages form obvious groups, each group is independent of the others
Kernel with modules+ramzswap (ramzswap has kernel as dependency, so it is impossible to bork diablo with it)
All dbus packages
All gconf2 packages
Scripts and other packages (all are harmless but some scripts are useless if kernel features aren't present)

Packages which aren't present in diablo can be simply uninstalled, including the kernel.
dbus and gconf are system packages, and they can't be uninstalled, but have to be reverted to the diablo release, which can be done with "apt-get install package=version", or alternatively, download the diablo version from the repository and "dpkg -i" it.

@ tso, do you still get those dbus errors in the debug log when alarmd isn't running or has been started post-boot?

i have not checked, will have a look now tho.

edit:
Code:
[2] [29.778961]  -> dbus-send SYSTEM com.nokia.mce.request.req_tklock_mode_change(...)
[2] [29.916931] [DBUS] received unhandled METHOD CALL
[2] [29.916931]         dest=com.nokia.system_ui /com/nokia/system_ui/request com.nokia.system_ui.request.tklock_open (ssssubb)
[2] [29.916931]         wants reply? = no
[2] [29.921661]  [DBUS] signal: com.nokia.mce.signal.tklock_mode_ind
[2] [29.921661]  [DBUS] signal: com.nokia.mce.signal.tklock_mode_ind (lock)
[2] [29.921661]  -> dbus-send SESSION org.freedesktop.Notifications.SystemNoteInfoprint(...)
[2] [29.937103] [DBUS ERROR] A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface "(unset)" member "(unset)" error name "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod" destination ":1.8")
[2] [29.937103]               dest=:1.514 (null) (null).(null) (s)
this shows up on hitting screen lock no matter if alarmd is running or not.

Do you get the "screen locked" notification?
