@ imperiallight
Yeah, why not ducktape it :P

@ysss
I have some oldies collections of movies games and shows.
I'd especially love to have my x-files collection on a single disc

So yes... my BD needs consist in 6-5 dvds...

>> @ysss what say you now ? Say what you like about Nokias problems with the N900, its reception is excellent. Actually the build quality is great

I think everybody here agrees that the N900 hardware is top notch (ok the GPS is a bit stogy, and the keyboard could be 4 rows instead of 3 but yea...)

Its Nokia's follow up support and software that totally sux ***.

@bec: make a NAS.. preferably a zfs based one with freeNAS or one with unRAID, where you can grow your storage one hdd at a time, up to 20 drives (+1 for parity). Dump all medias there.. run a gbit copper to xbmc on your big screen... simple and works. really. well.

Why not just *ahem* move to a real iPhone forum?

@ysss
I feel more confident with optical than magnetic storage. Not to mention I have a tendency to format clean once in a while:P
Which brings us to my next issue... SSDs
I don't really need one, but do I want one

PUWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Friggin' genius.

@bec - no, there isn't a way to overcome the hold the phone, signal is lessened ordeal. But, I figured out three things.
I normally don't hold my phone when I'm talking. I toss it in a pocket and use both hands normally.
When I do hold the phone, I'm gaming or chatting. Only that last one is affected if I'm on 3G.
I still can't figure out why the heck it dropped in my jeans yesterday, but not the jeans today. Maybe I got a hole?
The owner of the iPhone 4 is a constant hole the phone while talking - a downright phone gripper. He's catching hell with it, started to emulate me and my iPhone 3GS, I just place on a table and answer via bluetooth and has had better results.

The iPhone 4 did pass this one "black hole" of coverage though whereas my iPhone 3GS always loses reception there. I will have to note that I was not gripping the phone at the same time.

As of yesterday, I didn't know about the lowering of impedance while making contact with metals. All of those years with antennas and I kept my hand on them while moving them around makes me mad that I lost tons of time trying to get good reception for my folks.

They owe me, dang it.

Cause I stupidly dropped the phone and now there is a chunk missing from the side. Obviously the buyer didnt want the phone then - I am stuck with it until I have cash to get my next phone.

Gerbick

It doesn't surprise me that iPhone 4's antenna is more sensitive than iPhone 3Gs. Afterall, you are moving the antenna to the outer edge of the phone and away from all the inductive noise, which should improve the sensitivity of the antenna. So yes, it could have been great (and apple can probably still fix it in with some hardware mod in the next production batch, though they would probably need to compromise on aesthetics somewhat) had they thought about the minor issue of two antennas tuned to two different frequencies getting shorted by user's hand.

I think the whole design is faulty. Skin is conductive and whatever you would do it will absorb a lot of the EM radiation responsible for good signal.

I've seen wifi signal drop by only covering a plastic insulated antenna. I can imagine what touching it (the conductive part) directly would do.

Hmm, yeah. Looking at the design of the phone, it appears that that bottom bumper doesn't particularly do much. The actual antennae are on the left and the right. So it could be that the bottom bit was put to make the phone look good, but now is resulting in the antennae to get detuned at best and at worst it is providing a conductive path such that when both the gaps are covered by the fingers, it causes the two antennae to short

Edit: Some more updates:
A broken iPhone 4 after accidental drop from about a foot and one after a 3.5 feet drop test.
Also, you can now buy the bumpers here which would of course mean that you won't bug Apple for the design fault and will actually have to pay them $29 for the privilege of not noticing the product's flaws. After all, that is the Apple way. Every disaster is a marketing opportunity.

@ cue - seems like Engadget beat me to the punch.

iPhone 4 vs. Galaxy S... I'd suggest ignoring their commentary and just look at the pictures.
