Don't know if I can judge fairly as I have a 770 (although I have tried an 800). Well, I can judge the book reading, as I doubt that changed which I found smoother on the iPod, mainly because the font smoothing was better on the eyes.
The video watching is orders of magnitude better on the iPod, but maybe the 800 is orders of magnitide better than the 770, I don't know.

*chiming in*

I haven't done any movie playing on my iphone, but I plan to when CorePlayer (TCPMP) releases their mediaplayer for the iphone since it will support all kinds of video format and is very cpu efficient, comparatively speaking. (IE: The Coreplayer on my Treo 680 plays more videos formats and at better framerates than mplayer on my N800)

But for ebook, the Books.app application is really very good if you can convert your book to a format that it can read (currently only html and txt. PDF and RTF are on the pipeline). The size of the screen, crispness of display and the smoothness of control is quite a bit better than all other devices that I have which use passive touchscreen (ie: N800, treo 680, 650, sony n73, tapwave zodiac...). I've used FBReader for a bit and it's quite nice, but I end up using the iphone so much more (that I've even bothered to lookup utilities to convert pdf and mobibook formats to html) because of the iphone's better form factor and control.

The 770 and the N800 aren't even in the same league—on any level.

Now i understand your iphone/touch support.

The 800/810 is far far ahead when compared to 770. Seriously

I am happy to accept that - as I said, I didn't know.

Although I don't get the iPhone/iTouch support comment though. I have an iPod and it works very well. That isn't support, it is just calling something what it is.

I can see that the N800 would make the video playing better (although if it doesn't do full size, I don't see how it can do that much better). I don't see how it would affect the book reading.

Well it does. Double the ram and increased cpu. Seriously i brought the 770 in 2006 and used it for a year. At that time there was nothing like that ...... so i thought it was the best. Now with the n800 i just cant believe how i managed with the 770.

I am not a great fan of the n800 design (I like the metal case of the 770), but at some stage when a 800 comes along really cheap (like a refurb or clearance) I will probably get one. At the moment, it isn't a high priority, as between the iPod, eee, 770, psp, macbook pro and XP/Vista tablets, I don't really have much of a need!

That case is actually aluminum-anodized plastic.

Yes? I didn't know that. It is certainly robust, especially covering the screen.
