you can get UNLIMITED data over the Sprint network from Millenicom for $49.99/mo and no added fees or contract. They provide the Franklin CDU680 EVDO RevA modem. You would need an router with a USB port for the CDU680 but there are a couple of those from Cradlepoint, CTR350 or PHS300, that work excellently and are in the "travel/pocket router" class of wifi routers. So I take my mobile access with me everywhere and have no contract obligation nor do I need to worry about any tethering restrictions or issues. There is a $49.95 setup fee though. And if you do go with them save the original box and what not for the CDU680 because they want everything back. I have not asked directly but I was told by another Millenicom customer that after a year they consider the EVDO device yours. But I would never count on that part.

Also, I am sure Sprint has a SERO with truly unlimited data also and it may allow tethering...

SERO is hit and miss on a good day. You have to signup for the 2-years and then you have keep calling the CSR's trying to weasel "perks" onto the package. Sprint is notorious for dropping subscriber or canceling these perks without notice. Just head over to howard forums and check out the latest on the boondoogle. Yes some people got good deals, but it's not universal and there are plenty of horror stories as well.

Their advertised price appears to have gone up to $59.99/month.

Wow, the first reason I've wanted to move to the United States! Well, the second if you include Disney World.

EDIT: I was just informed that unlimited Disney World is not included with your vanilla tax plan. So scratch that.

There were a bunch of wi-fi hotspots around, though, so I spent 30+ minutes configuring RTCOMM, Gizmo, and GC, just to make a 2 minute call!
You sound like someone I could hang out with.

Hey z2n, first of all, thank you so much for bringing it all together with this front end gui. It's nothing short of awesome.

Second, as a suggestion here is a mock-up of what I think would make it more convenient. I know you are talking about integration with the contact list but I personally find it useless and slow on the Nokia and don't believe I'd use such a feature. So, take it with a grain of salt and maybe someone else could even add more to making it simple or more powerful.

My thoughts were:
1) The buttons were too long and actually made it more difficult to dial numbers.
2) The "dial" button seemed like it made more sense in the bottom right and color coded green for "go".
3) The destructive buttons are painted in red with "backspace" being right next to the number to be dialed.
4) The alphabetic letters that coincide with the numbers on a standard phone are added to the button for ease.
5) The text is bigger and all buttons have the same size and shape.
6) A previous call list allows you to tap on a number you dialed and it becomes the number you are about to dial. This list should not list duplicates as it could change all numbers into the same number and would therefore be useless.
7) It would be cool to hear a tone each button that is pressed but not necessary. I'd rather the program launch fast rather than eat up more memory and take longer to start.
8) Though it's not shown, a favorites would be awesome. Maybe if there are tabs available in Python you could switch between "Previous calls" and "Favorites"

Again, these are just my thoughts. Again thanks for such an awesome program.

I like Munk 's Ideas. (nice screenshot, I know its edited) But it would be really nice if you could get something like that.

I personally would not like #7. But Im not going to be picky....

Integration with any other app (including the default Nokia contact list) would almost certainly be done through the dbus service, and won't be happening until a couple of revisions from now.

Once again, the package is public domain...the GUI was designed with glade-3 and the program that processes the GUI is really simple python...my first python program, in fact. Anyone can mess with it.

I'm not certain about those ideas...but I'll play around.

This is in the works. I'm not sure how to handle duplicates. I like your suggestion, but the other alternative is to handle the list as it appears on a cell phone...each number is listed, with information about the date & time the call was placed (not the duration, sorry), and whether the call was successful. In this case, you'd almost certainly have duplicated numbers, but you'd gain the information about when the calls were made.

Of course, that's available from the Grandcentral website as well, so perhaps eliminating the duplicates is a better choice.

Not gonna happen...at least not anytime soon.

As far as how fast the program launches, I've found that installing and enabling the pylauncher daemon makes a big difference in the startup time for the dialer application.

Hmm...this sounds a great deal like access to the contacts list.

There's now a Maemo Garage project for the GC Dialer. At this moment, there are no files on the site, but please look there in the future for the current release and
the latest development version.
