Must be a pretty serious issue to cause a delay, my guess would be an issue with the radio frequencies (dropped calls, draining battery on some poor networks) as this is the only thing Nokia would not be able to test without handing out 300 units worldwide. Or could be a hardware issue (loose cable, disk fault etc)

Delays are usually taken very seriously due to damage to reputation, lost sales, idle production plants etc. so it certainly wouldn't be delayed just to add portrait or MMS.

I'm wondering if its safer to cancel the pre-order and wait for the second batch incase the first batch have some hardware issues (infamous first batch issues: wobbly slider of n95, scratch lens of n97, poor reception of E71 when holding the bottom)

anidel, do you already have a copy of this phone? The only way you'd understand why people are disappointed at Nokia's constant change of release that is if you don't already have one. Nokia needs to set their window of modification, if you will, not so closed to the announced release date. That is if Nokia feels it will take them roughly two weeks to do any adjustment to the device, if necessary, they should account that to the "release date". Not on the day or a week before the release date and they announce the release date will be delayed. Nokia's marketing departments needs some reshuffle else they risk loosing customers.

Actually Nokia stated October. So it's only a few weeks long delay

I know what you mean, but no one ever promised anything.
I am sure that the delay was for a very good (or some very good) reasons.

Let's just wait, it'll be here soon.

I understand the anticipation, and the feeling of having a device NOW rather than later.

But I don't understand why people are "angry"

And btw, may be the issue with the 3 UK SIM card may be at the base of this delay.

No company will ever want to ship a device that doesn't work with some SIM cards.

Just guessing.

I never see adults throw fits when they don't get what they want. Only children do that.

If Nokia is only targeting devs and tablet users, no harm no foul. I think that due to their pricing (device seems lower cost for what you get), they are targeting more than those folks.

They want smart phone users, but do not yet have the basic functions most smart phoners use all the time.

I expect Nokia to correct this issue quickly.
Well, I can speak only from my own point of view but I don't want to use on-screen keyboard to write SMS when device has full qwerty available. If the situation is that I have only one had available I would just answer that SMS later or take phone in my hand and make a regular phone call.

Web sites are also most of the time developed for landscape usage so I don't need portrait mode there neither. This device is obviously designed around landscape usage and IMO it does very good job there. If device wouldn't have hardware keys then situation might be totally different.

People coming from devices which are used mostly on portrait mode might need some adaptation time with N900. But I'm quite sure that most of them will be happy with the device.

For those who think threatening to cancel your pre-order is going to speed Nokia up in their release, think again. What you are actually doing is bumping all the other pre-orders up on the list, as it were -- more available hardware, to be sent out to everyone else.

I would assume the issues are all software, as the loaner units in the field seem to be working fine (or I am sure we would hear about it, even from proponents of the product -- sometimes the harshest critics), they will get the software update on their units as the final product it rolled out.

Enjoy the wait. Makes for a better story when you get the device. Embrace the notion that Nokia cares enough to hold back the N900 until they make it as robust as they can at release time.

hi,i have used an e90 for a few years now,and have never wanted portrait mode except for the one on the front sreen to make phone calls,I have tried the iphone quite a few times and find the way screen changes when you move annoying.i hope the changes to the n900 do inclube an off button for portrait mode so we can choose, The delay is difficult but i am sure we will get a better n900 from all the feed back from the loan devices which has got to be to are advantage

Aren't adults just kids with money? ;-)
