I have the same problem.
I did try running Abiword using the "--verbose=2" switch, but the output in xterm was still the same ("Aborted"). It happens when saving and opening a document and when inserting from a file.
Opening a document in in Abiword via xterm ($ abiword filename.abw) opens a black "window" for a split second before it crashes, and once again xterm gives me "Aborted".
If I really, really need to read a document, I can use Abiword to convert files to HTML, with the "--to=name" switch, and then view it in the browser. That probably only works because it's all done in the console.
