I am surprised there is no way to roll-back to the previous version. I'm sure the community at large will come up with a solution.

However, I learnt from experience not to update something as soon as a new version is released. I always wait to see what other users experience before jumping in.

I am quite happy with my n900 and will not use use this update. I'll wait to see how the next one goes before I update.

BTW I am extremely grateful to people who updated the firmware as soon as it was released and then published thier findings. This helped me decide to update or not.

Why's so that you are surprised?

This firmware upgrade also involves upgrading the GSM firmware and this new one looks like it's incompatible with the previous Maemo OS firmware.
This GSM update I think it's the fix to the 3G USIM card issue.

That is good

I got just several days old N900. And I have no problems mentioned on this forum with the newest update whatsoever. Lifetime of my device:

1) Basic setup, contacts/calendar/etc. transfer from my N95
2) Updated to 1.0.1 via NSU (and was pleasantly surprised that it didn't reset the user space db)
3) Installed tons of apps, BUT, just as any sane person would do with his computer - I first informed myself about them, what they do, what they change, especially the ones in extras testing/devel repositories. Also removed the useless crap like the FB Installer and such.
4) When PR1.1 become available, I waited almost a full day to check for possible problems with the newest update and then weighted pros and cons - if there was some catastrophic mass-scale failure of some feature that is essential to me, I'd wait even longer. Also made sure that I have no app that could possibly break the update installed. There was no mention (apart from bricking, but I was prepared to flash my device if needed) of serious issues at large, so I did update OTA to 1.1.
5) Tested all the features that are essential to me after the update.
6) Everything works as it was (including the previously installed apps), if not faster.

Conclusion: With a somewhat careful approach (ex sysadmin speaks from me), and maybe a sprinkle of luck, I am immensely pleased with the results.

The most complains on the newest update come from users that carelessly installed stuff from testing and devel repositories, so even if I can acknowledge that PR1.1 has its own set of problems, I am inclined to lay the blame for catastrophic failures mostly on careless users that think that on a device as powerful as this (not MIPS speaking, but user access level type of power), that has almost no restrictions on what you can do to it and what can you install, you can do whatever you like without the consequences. With great power, comes great responsibility.

That being said, downgrade (even if would require a complete reflash) should always be an option because all the problems with the updates cannot be listed and discovered timely, and for some people that even follow the `careful approach` route a downgrade must be left as an option. From what I've heard, in this case the FW updated not only device's firmware but also the one of the GSM module which would make it incompatible with the previous versions of the OS. However, that cannot be an excuse as they should offer downgrade of the GSM firmware as well with the previous version of the device. The only justification I can come up at the moment is that GSM firmware is not downgradeable hence making the 1.0 revision unusable after the update, but even that can circumvented by declaring a GSM firmware downgrade as an upgrade for already upgraded firmwares.

I sure hope that in the future Nokia will come up with a way to have painless downgrades as soon I'll be giving my old, trustworthy N95 to my sister and N900 will remain my only cell device so I wouldn't like to come in situation when I cannot downgrade upgrade that did something unexpected to my shiny preciousssss...

My 2¢

I'm not having a go at the post above, i just want to say that i, as a windows computer expert but a linux noob, am fully aware of the dangers of the testing and devel repositories, which is why i have a 'clean' N900 having not installed anything from these areas while i gradualy learn the ropes. Yet i also have the new battery bug - draining from fully charged overnight! and the video bug - all the videos that previously worked now do not.
I had no choice but to take the firmware install as Nokia kept me waiting for the 3 sim card fix and a month on a spare PAYG sim was enough whilst paying my 3 contract.
Some on here accused others of being impatient whilst waiting for the new firmware, constantly reminding the members that it would be better to wait and have a fully working update that a rushed incomplete job that caused new problems.
Well i'm sorry Nokia, if you are listening. This is NOT a finished, properly working, fully tested firmware update. I'm sorry to say that the N900 deserves a better parent company.
Your silence has been deafening.

How sad indeed

Did you already try to backup and reflash because you are experiencing so horrible problems?

Don't get me wrong - I said catastrophic failures, as in bricking the device or making it totally useless after the update. I am fully aware that PR1.1 surely has its own quirks, that's the nature of software development - you fix some bugs, you introduce some others... Bug-free software will never exist, at least not software that is used on a mass-scale.

As for the SIM problem with `3` cards, Nokia acknowledged that from the day one of the release, so you probably knew what's in store for you when you bought it. They promised they'll fix it, and they obviously did, but, at least in your case, with some additional problems.

This, of course, doesn't mean that they shouldn't find a way to provide a downgrade for the cases where new problems render the device hardly usable, or where cons overweight the pros. I think I already made myself clear on that.

What on earth are you talking about? who said anything about reflashing? or are you suggesting that i do? i didn't say "so horrible problems" anywhere...i said "This is NOT a finished, properly working, fully tested firmware update" which it isn't.

Yes, as i said i wasn't having a go at you, just pointing out that it is possible to have a 'clean' device and still get problems with this update.
re 3 sim...yes, i knew as i read alot before buying but i'm also liable to eager anticipation ...which is, i suppose, the major cause of the disappointment.

Great guide not cannot get the FW as the site has been down for me for the last 2 days

The camera is now unuseable, it takes pics... but cannot see them on the phone. Battery now down to 3 hrs when phone in use.

Quite prepared to reflash but cannot even do that now

Back to my N95 for me
