The Imagination PowerVR SGX540 core in the Galaxy Tab is a VERY powerful GPU to compliment the quite capable Hummingbird. The 540 uses tile-based rendering to reduce computation and memory requirements for processing graphics which improves performance quite a bit. It's no wonder that the 540 is one of the top GPUs.

I should note, though, that while the 540 compares well with discreet GPUs, it has been bested by the HTC G2's Qualcomm Adreno 205 (the snapdragon 2nd gen GPU) by a good margin. Still, it performs very well for a modern mobile GPU!

Either GPU is more than capable of displaying current games, but will be BLOWN AWAY by future dual-core CPU/GPU combos. The Samsung Orion SoC is claimed to have a 500% improvement over the current Hummingbird, and the Adreno 220 will be a force to be reckoned with as well!

What's most interesting is that the 540 offers GPGPU capability! For those that don't know, it is moving some computation onto the highly capable GPU. I suppose this should be obvious as it has programmable shaders, but this is a feature that seems not to be explored deeply with current software. The fact of the matter is, that games aside, and coupled with the 540, the Tab should be capable of some pretty impressive software.
There's little reason to suggest that the Tab is incapable of doing 3D modeling, video editing, large graphic editing, vector editing, animation, or other applications that we tend to exclusively associate with the desktop. Moreover, it could run these applications at a good clip with well oiled code and without a tremendous strain to the CPU with correct GPU/DSP offloading.
While I *do* like performance progress, I feel that it makes developers lazy and many of these optimizations will be overlooked, and it will result in more bloated code that relies heavily on the host CPU for simple calculation. I suppose this is not bad, but it would be nice to see the full potential of the Tab tapped and the GPGPU explored more thoroughly!

This is a steal, considering the storage potential! I don't know about you, but a 16GB Tab with two 16GB microSDs is sounding very, very nice. You can fit around 20 700MB movies on a 16GB card. Of course, if you don't like to swap, the 32GB card is available (though double the price).

While the function of the Tab in home automation is really neat, take a look at that UI! Samsung really is a design centric company and it shows. The typefaces, the colours, the layout are all brilliantly done and not sterile and segmented like you'd typically find in a typical program, but very natural and lively for the thing being displayed.
I hope that developers take notice of Samsung's UI examples, as this is the next step in popular UI design trends -- I can feel it in my bones.
In my opinion, they are one of the only companies that consistently produces design comparable to Apple (and IMO often exceeds them), though some of their hardware does not have the same build quality. I may be the only one to say this, but I think the lines of the Galaxy Tab are nicer than that of the iPad, though the iPad's aluminum is a nice touch. Of course, this is all a matter of opinion.

As posted elsewhere, this might also explain Jobs losing his mind... he HATES that Android is starting to steal some of the "coolness" factor away from Apple.

I've considered iPad/iPhone, but apps aside, when I think of what I would have to give up for those products in light of Android devices, it's hard to take them seriously.
Here's a short list (in no order):
- Command line access incl. full Debian CLI
- Voice input across all input fields
- live wallpapers and widgets
- very mature and fast (js + dom) web browser incl.flash
- stock google navigation
- OOTB ability to install apps outside of the official marketplace
- multiple marketplaces (this *is* a good thing)
- proper multitasking (the implementation is very clever)
- UI theming and extreme customizability
- rapid update cycle of OS/Apps
- OOTB integrated google services
- excellent notification system
- common micro SD expansion
- freedom to choose device based on requirements
- generally lower prices
- app availability across *all* devices
- extremely active community with at least one OS fork (cyanogen)
- different on-screen keyboards (including the upcoming built-in blindtype)
- Fully OSS (and active) SIP client
- as a developer....
- The ability to script using a variety of languages
- No approval needed for app release (only Google marketplace)
- Free SDK includes desktop emulator for testing prior
- resolution independence
- binary independence (target phone, tablet, netbook, or set top box)
I could go on, but that's a pretty good list. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone/iPad is very nice, but sorely lacking when compared to Android devices for anything but a very casual user. This makes it hard for me to consider paying more for what amounts to be a brand and a 'sleek' device.
Of course, the iPhone's strengths are mainly in the build quality and the quality/quantity of key apps. But these advantages are quickly disappearing as exclusive iPhone traits.
If I were Jobs, I would feel threatened as well. iOS is a major part of the apple empire and Android is a very harsh and very direct competitor to this area of Apples business. With the advent of Eclair, coupled with EVO, Galaxy S, and Droid X, Android's reputation has improved dramatically making these devices close substitutes for the once-untouched iPhone.

This is the only reason why the update cycle for iOS devices is somewhat a turn off -- for me anyhow. Though they release new devices yearly, which is nice for new buyers.
Even the *oldest* android phone, the G1, has had the benefit of having Froyo installed on it via cyanogen, and it's likely to get Gingerbread as well.
