How would you work around a broken USB port with respect to charging and reflashing the device?

I'm a UK N900 owner and the USB port fell out on Feb 2nd. Phone was spotless (I had the case for it before I got the phone itself!) except for the USB port falling out. Nokia arranged UPS collection, then when I hadn't heard anything 10 days later (bear in mind they state they will return the phone or contact you within 7 days) I called them. The first operative I spoke to swore blind that the phone only arrived that day, despite me offering to send them the UPS proof of delivery for the 4th Feb. He arranged a priority repair and on Monday (we spoke on Friday) my phone was returned to me with no repair and the note saying warranty void due to user damage. It took me several calls but I finally got in touch with someone who actually did call back when they said they would. She arranged for the phone to be collected again, which it was on Monday this week. I have just had a call saying a new replacement phone is shipping today with UPS.

IMHO Nokia have been obstructive, uninformative, closed and insulting (they are calling us all liars by saying it's user damage) but after 21 days of constant phoning and emailing it seems I am finally getting something sorted out. Hope the rest of you manage to get somewhere as well. If it's any help, I sent a signed letter specifically saying that the phone has not been mishandled by me in any way and I was anal enough to keep a log of every single phone call, with names and outcomes + emails obviously, which I included.

Your talks with Nokia sound very much like mine. I got cut off a few times. They seemed unable to hear what I was saying. And not once did they call or email when they promised to.

My work prevents me from sitting on the phone for hours trying to get this resolved. and the line is only open 8am - 7pm.

Fair point - I have the insurance papers at home ready in case Nokia turned down the warranty repair again but this way is £25 cheaper and means Nokia had to admit it wasn't my fault!

What please? I said that I do not want to be party pooper or "dad", but fact is that even slightly suggesting made up stories for insurance company is highly illegal in my world. Sorry for being rigorous bastard :|

"Always around" doesn't make any sense to me.

For the UK owners what has trading standards attitude been towards this?
Mine is currently fine although the handset faulty and being replaced today i've not had the usb fault yet but it really is worrying me it seriously makes you want to get another phone
