I don't practically expect to ... but the recent article where a Nokia exec said that they'd be using Linux in more of their products gave me some hope that it wouldn't be too far away.

And, really, with today's Android demo, Nokia ought to be considering it a race. If they (google/android) end up releasing a quad-band GSM with WCDMA 1700 phone, 4-4.5" touch screen, with a side-slide QWERTY keyboard, ssh and vnc clients, PIM suite that syncs to Google apps (and is hopefully usable off-line), IMAP client, and Yahoo/AOL client (hopefully also with MSN and IRC support), and they do it before Nokia ports Maemo to their phones ... then it's very possible that I'd be jumping ship rather quickly. Add tri-band WCDMA (adding AT&T and Euro/Asian), and dual SIM cards... and I wont think twice if Nokia isn't even close to a Maemo phone delivery.

Well, it's very likely you're going to be jumping ship. I'm curious though, why is WCDMA a must have for you? The only thing I could think was that you have currently have a T-mobile contract, but other than that, what's 1700 go that the other bands don't? The QWERTY keyboard, sycing with google apps, mail and IM clients are kinda of a forgone conclusion at this point. ssh and vnc may be third party, and screen real estate...well, 3x5 inches (device not screen) has been consistently "leaked" for a while, how much of that is screen real estate is anyones guess.

I am not currently on T-Mobile. I'm currently on MetroPCS -- no contract, but also lousy data service. I'm planning to switch to T-Mobile in the near future. Why I want T-Mobile is: best data plan prices. Their 3G network is WCDMA 1700, thus, I want my 3G device to have WCDMA 1700 support.

The only IM client that I think you could say is a foregone conclusion is GoogleTalk. And for Mail, they could leave out an IMAP client and assume you'll access mail through google's mobile Mail app and/or through the web browser to gmail.

the maemo-related part of linuxTag should be over by now. nothing really exciting so far, at least from what i can tell by following the posts on planet maemo. (well, it could be that the excitement is so big that they all passed out and can't blog any more).

Well, the big things are (from what I gather from the slides, and #maemo):
  1. 100 days of community focus (that takes us up to Quim's comment about being busy at the end of September)
  2. maemo community summit in Berlin, 19th September.
  3. elephanta's been cancelled. Whatever features were planned for it won't be released on their own.
  4. fremantle's been brought forward. This'll come bundled with the community Qt4 and an "evolved" Gtk+. Presumably the rest of its scope has been curtailed somewhat, and features from elephanta pushed back into it.
  5. harmattan's been announced. fremantle + 1 will feature a Nokia-supported, fully integrated Qt4 - in addition to Gtk+.

From an end-user point of view, the exciting thing we can all speculate about is why elephanta's been canned. I'd guess that could mean a newer device (running fremantle) earlier than had originally been planned. Or, alternatively, the N900 is delayed and so fremantle's been brought forward specifically for the existing N8x0s. The fun thing about speculation is it can go either way :-)

Good summary, but still... none of these is really exciting, some isn't even real news. the only thing that i wasn't prepared for is elephanta being canceled, and i doubt i should be excited about that.

I'll vote for the first, since the competitor push is more pressing lately - what with the new Via and Puma processors going out and all the MID fiasco.

Or at least i'd like to think that way

I guess it depends on your perspective.
