What did you download ? If you have the right repos, you can install it direct from the phone. If you have a *****.deb then try dpkg -i *****.deb in Terminal. Best would be to do this when you are root.

you can get the repo from here
It is the quick way to get it

It's OK, it looks like you're suffering from the usual culture clash of the proprietary->free software transition. We generally don't tend to install software by grabbing bits from all over the place and installing them individually - everything gets put into one of a few central repositories, then the Application Manager on your device grabs a list of everything that's available, you can browse it all in one place, then when you find something you want you can just install it right there and then. Better, if it relies on any other bits, the software can just automatically pull them in too.

That's how it's supposed to work; the current situation with the emulators is a bit sub-optimal, but hopefully that explains the general principle.

Do it like this :
Open your App. Manager, then Tap on the "appmanager" @ the top of the screen. A window pops up. Tap the "Programcatalogue", and there "New"
Fill everything in that new opend window that it looks like this
Then save it.
After that and a refresh of the catalogue, you should be able to find it with the app manager.

Sorry for the maby miss spelled words, im from germany, and i dont know how that is 100% called on a eng. N900.
I hope you get what im taking about.
