Is it still worth trying the second command?
Just to be sure.. did you do:

Code:
sudo gainroot
to gain root privileges before running the first command?

And no.. if you can't remove the files, it does no good to do the next command.

Ok.. my fault. You want these *three* commands, in order:

Code:
sudo gainroot
rm -f /var/lib/apt/lists/*
apt-get update
Please try that and let me know.

It said "Enable RD mode if you want to break your device."

Shall I go on with the other two commands?

sudo gainroot told you that? I've never heard that before..

Can't hurt to run the next command. Best/worst case you get the same permission denied errors.. or it works and removes those files. Which is fine.

Or.. who knows.. you break it all and have to reflash . Sounds like you were already thinking of that anyway . This is quite unlikely, though. That looks more like just a warning that using root is typically dangerous.

Also, btw, copy/paste should be accessible from the menu. If you click on the application name at the top of the screen you should have a menu drop down and in there is "copy" and "paste".

I dunno if the N900 has keyboard shortcuts for it.

No copy/paste commands in X Terminal. Just "New" and "Font".

Got the same "permission denied" messages as before, btw.

A thought.. do you have the "rootsh" package installed? If not.. I guess whatever the person who told you red pill is the only way to go.. since you would need to download the rootsh deb file by hand and install it anyway since your Application Manager is not working.

Still baffles me this package is needed for root.

I do think a reflash should fix it.. if you wanted to go that far. Some settings are saved on a reflash, but I really highly doubt the repository lists & caches are.

I don't have it installed. The bolded bit is what they had in mind, I think.

Reflashing -- the same as restoring factory settings, isn't it? -- should be fine with my device anyway, since I haven't really used it enough to lose much in terms of settings or data.

It's also sort of another last resort. If that doesn't work, I'd have to send it back to Nokia, I would imagine.

I'm not particularly keen on installing every app manually, either. So even if rootsh allows me to install apps, I'm not sure I'd want to do it that way every time.
