As I have said before the n900 is an important milestone in the evolution of smartphones and phone/mid/umpc convergence.

One also wouldn't expect to buy such devices given how expensive they are...

One of my main selling points for this product (and all past Maemo products) I used to evangelize to people was this community. With these attitudes, I stopped doing that.

You will be part of what drives customers to this commercial product, or you will be part of what drives them away.

So if you don't smile, say nice things and be genuinely helpful when the 9 millionth "idiot" walks in here yapping about no MMS with out searching or making comparisons to their mommy's iphone, then all of it will eventually go away. We need customers people! Not attitudes.

Many users would be happier with a candybar phone, with no web, mp3 player or the like. That's why those phones still exist, and are still being made.

No matter what you think, it's certainly NOT the duty of this forum to let users know anything about other phones they may prefer to use. If that's offered at all, it as a side note. It's the consumers responsibility to research expensive devices before they purchase (and/or sell) them. This is not Engadget or TechForum, or a hundred other sites out there that compare phones, nor should it be.

The responsibility of this forum is to people that own an N900 that are looking to converse with like people to better their experience with the device. It's responsible for helping those people collaborate on new ideas, choose what new features should be considered or implemented both privately and on the corporate side, and helping people share actual, factual knowledge about the device.

It is not responsible for airing the ill-informed opinions of people that have never owned, or sold the device without consulting the forum for help. In fact, in most similar forums threads like this would be moderated into the bit bucket before page 3 was formed. Don't believe me? Go try it on an iPhone discussion board and see how long you have an account there.

I work for a company working with micro controller systems. We buy products like this all the time. Do you think because a product is a development platform that some how it's material costs and the hours that go into forming a base platform for it are magically free? Wow...

I get that... I truly do. But when they come in ranting, having already sold their phone, no matter what they're told, it's not going to get them back one bit. They've already sold... It's done. Why are we allowing them to vent here? It's not helping us, since most people like them doing "research" don't even get past the title of the thread.

And we do have a few trolls on here, many of which don't even own the device, saying things about it that are just false (like "most people own a second phone" because it's unreliable as a phone). What do you do? Smile, and say "sorry you think that?" No... That doesn't work. Even if you offer a solution to their problem, most will continue to insist it doesn't work "out of the box", and continue to post the same misinformation. How do you propose we handle that?

There was one person recently who commented in 8 different threads (some that were dead for months) about how crappy the media player was. He didn't even own the device, and kept arguing how he's seen it on youtube and it was crap. Should we just let people post lies about the device? Are they entitled to express their opinion here, based on nothing?

If so, maybe it's time I leave, since that's not what I though this forum was for. I though it was for N900 owners helping each other. Expressing ideas for how to improve the device and the experience. If it's going to just be a place for random people to come and spout lies about the device unchallenged, I don't think I want to be a part of it.

You want to trade a bag full of ignorant people griping about a device they don't own for actual developers who don't want to put up with the crap? You're right, it will go away... quickly.

...and it does limited productivity very well too, and it is a laptop/netbook replacement for all crossover purposes.

Camera is awesome too - of course in absolute terms it is not all that good, but it is good enough that I no longer use our new Pentax 12M compact camera for "happy snaps".

Anyone is allowed to dislike the N900, but making condemning proclamations about it believing that they are the beholders of the absolute truth and assinging anyone that genuinely likes the N900 (me for example) to the loony bin is a bit irritating.
