N9 really is the sweet spot size-wise. But the announcement said something big is about to begin, not to arrive. "Begin" suggests a continuous action, not an object. A film can begin, a picture can't.

In other words, they got the countdown wrong. Something big has already begun: a lot of pointless speculation in this thread.

so if it's something that will begin, it will definitely be the publication of a new hardware partner which will use Sailfish.
... and tada, it's Nokia!

Then the jolla can continue its phone line and the new beginning of brand name, including announcement a new device for future release.

But I think if you have TOHs you need to keep up compatibility, at least for phones.
right.. hope same size with bigger/better screen and S-Amoled for LPS

I think that the hints are quite clear, let me elaborate and sum up all information:

  • It's definitely a hardware, not software announcement (it clearly shows a device of some kind)
  • If it is a new device by Jolla, then it is not a phone. 1) The next phone is planned for H2 2015 and this is early to announce it. 2) Dirk has worked with Jolla on the TOHKBD and nobody expected it would go so well. Announcing a new device incompatible with TOH (as the word BIG would suggest) in the middle of the Kickstarter campaign wouldn't make any sense. 3) The teaser claims it is a beginning - 2nd phone would not be a beginning. 4) If it was a phone, it would have to be BIG and that's not what most of current Jolla customers are calling for.
  • If it is made by Jolla, it probably isn't a tablet either - the tablet market grows way less (if at all) than the phone market and it is already very difficult to succeed there. Splitting forces to make a tablet wouldn't make much sense.
  • The teaser talks about a beginning and the main focus of Jolla was to bring SailfishOS to other manufacturers. Therefore I think that the announcement is about a new device (and partnership) with other manufacturer.
  • I think that it has a lot to do with the sale coupons Jolla has been offering last few weeks. They are clearing the shelf, because other manufacturers are likely to have a better price point.
  • Judging by the teased design, I would say the partner might be Xiaomi, but it might be just a wishful thinking

If the design of a future model is not yet complete or certain aspects are not yet determined, they will never state anything about this. I wouldn't also.

I can only hope that for future models I can hazz access to proto models We'll see what they come up with at Slush! Looking forward to it!
Nice to see that someone with ostensibly more vested interest in retaining the status quo is not one of the sour-sounding, irrational luddites

I think your conclusion could be right, but where do you get the info that a second phone is planned for H2 2015? Speculation?

The cosmic rays that penetrated his tinfoil hat told him.

Unless there are major partnerships with OEMs that yield 3rd party devices, there's no way Jolla can continue to market the existing device as their only phone until H2 ... and I'd be quite surprised if this is such an announcement (even if the OEM / ODM for the phone is one of the big players), given the current state of progress with Sailfish. Depending on progress with Sailfish and how well MWC goes for Jolla, I'd expect 3rd party devices to possibly materialise around Q3 next year.

I'm not very confident in Jolla's overall strategy or priorities, but I'm fairly sure even they would baulk at releasing a tablet at this stage. Main purpose people use tablets for is browsing, media and games. To put it bluntly, the browser and gallery suck in Sailfish, media features are seriously lacking, and the UI across all 3 is poor and would be a whole lot worse on a tablet. Games aren't going to appear in any number until there are paid apps and a much higher installed base. The UI and some apps would need to be quite different for a tablet, and would need a lot of man-hours, which would then further detract from the main phone platform (which has seen very little system-wide or core-app based UI improvements).

5.5" phone would seem most likely.

Agree. Besides, the TOH doesn't even have a proper 'connector', it's just a few pins popping up from across the mid-part of the phone board, in the most convenient place from pcb point of view.
Keep that placement on a Jolla 2 would make it an inconvenience for those who designs the main board, while retaining the awkward geometry for those who work on TOH accessories.

Another hint that a new Jolla device with big screen is waiting for us is the email on SailfishDevel mailing list titled "Jolla release plan for high level features - update10" from 6th November :
Apart from finalizing update10, we will start the following activities:
...
- start the work on platform UI scalability, beginning with making icons resolution independent and improving layout scaling
My guess : Sailfish will be scale independent before 2015Q2, with a new device with big screen in 2015H1. Possibly a tablet (7-10"), maybe a phablet (5-6").
