OK, so based on that thread from whatsapp-purple it might be a good idea to bump the (reported) client version from:
"S40-2.12.82-443"
to
"S40-14.26-443"

I wasn't able to find the Whatsup source repository , so I made this change by hex-editing /opt/whatsup/bin/whatsup, but it made no difference. I closed Whatsup in order to prevent getting blocked. Once I saw it was working again for other people:
I opened (the unpatched) Whatsup and it worked again for me too.

Replying to myself -- it seems that the latest version of yowsup uses:
2.12.89
So that might be more relevant.
