Let's not go too OT with this, but Toyota is the perfect example. They received complaints as far back as 2004 about sudden accelerations. Instead of fixing those problems right away, they used the same accelerator pedals and ECUs on more and more models. Instead of fixing a few hundreds of thousands of cars back in 2004, they have to fix close to 8 million in 2010.

The big difference being Nokia really only has to worry about devices up to 2012 at the longest. And by refusing to fix as many as possible it only has to worry about folks like us who chase this up. And discover it is a known fault.

Most will be annoyed but will accept Nokia's refusal.

If you want to force Nokia to do the right thing. We need to bring this to more potential customers attention.

The problem we have is we are now left with a choice. Wait for nokia to do the right thing. or

Go out on a organised and massive media campaign and truly risk taking down Nokia and losing the whole maemo/meego platform.

I am getting closer to option 2 each day. (if you read some of my previous posts it should be easier then it looks nowadays, )

Some good news.

Or at least it looks very very positive atm.

After my phone call with Nokia care yesterday I was told I would be emailed a form to send the handset to the real head office of Nokia care.

It was agreed that they should pay for it not me. But that took some argument.

The email did not come.

But instead I got a phone call 5 mins ago from a very capable and helpful young lady by the name of Becky. At Nokia Care UK.

She told me that she wanted to arrange to recieve the hand set. Shge is even arranging to have it picked up from the care centre in Thatcham saving me a 70 mile drive.

She also confirmed that yes this is a known problem and it should be covered by the Warranty.

This is the first time I have actually managed to speak to anyone representing Nokia who made me feel this may genuinily be a communications issue and not Nokia trying to avoid taking responsibility for the issue.

I also beleave this is the first time I have spoken to anyone who works directly for Nokia and not some subcontracted or outsourced provider.

I think there is a link between these 2 facts.

Lets see what happens when they get the device.but atm I am feeling fairly positive.

EDIT: Becky just phoned me back. To inform me she had contacted the care center and informed them she would be taking over the case.

She had arranged for the handset to be collected on monday and would recieve it tuesday, She will have it looked at by and engineer and be phoneing me back with a resolution on tuesday.

I may well propose when she dose

After all the ordeal you have been through, I wouldn't be surprised if you are enamored with her nice'ness After all she has been the only one at Nokia who looked at your case differently!

I would be eager to see when an engineer 'inspects' the device and gives his verdict.

good luck buddy.

I think it's a bit early to bite nokia, let's give them some time to handle this issue ...

I am thinking on a positive way on how our community can help to goes through this problem :

So I created a page on the wiki, first it will be useful to identify the broken devices, please fill :

On that page the following is stated.

"No reason to panic most users are not affected and it seems trivial to repair.. "

I have no idea where you are getting that idea from. It is in no way trivial to repair, It requires a replacement motherboard. IE cannot be repaired at a reasonable cost and must be replaced.

Edit:
Add to this that on most reports up to now Nokias response has been a refusal to repair. We are prolly better of indicating that this is a possibility but do not panic You need to get the device esculated to Nokias head office for replacement.

Edit again.

Also even then we have absolutly no reason to think that replacing the device is going to solve the problem.

Sorry but over all this page indicates a lack of understanding of the seriosness of the issue.

This thead has been pretty active in the community so the 12% in the poll is prolly a fair representation of the number of people with problems. Plus another 7% with issues indicating it may become a problem.

I am all for giving Nokia the chance to do the right thing but underplaying the importance of the situation just makes the community look uninformed.

I strongly disagree. It's been almost a month for me. For others, even longer. Despite Nokia's early reaction, not much has happened. It is about time we do something, otherwise we stretch the time-window too far and Nokia will decide to completely ignore us since the release dates for new devices replacing the n900 are moving in closer.

If we do not react now/soonish, we risk defeat/ignorance.

Great Job! But please rephrase the first sentence "Seems that ...". It does not simply "Seem" to be present, it is present!

No reason to panic most users are not affected and it seems trivial to repair..
>> Rephrase asap. Most users are not affected *yet*, and it certainly does not seem trivial to repair!

Please do not post a wiki entry before getting in the right information and maybe discussing it first with people having a proper insight!
