Exactly, there's been some really great thoughts in this thread, amongst the deafening noise...
Some of which might really inspire them, or make them think about things they hadn't considered.

Having followed this thread here, I strongly believe that there should be much more patience instead of all this speculation and reading between the lines.

In a nutshell, what we know so far is that they announced a handheld device with something called "Jolla" that will be based on Mer. What they will do in the end is actually up to them.

We will see what it will be when it's done. To stress quite an old quote once more: "It's done when it's done.".
good point except I want them to show what kind of SDK they will use. I mean will we have to totally rewrite apps written for harmattan? Will they use qt-components? How about qtmobility api? What will happen with import com.nokia.meego in case if qt cimponents?

thats WAY more important question to ask instead of how open or how many phones or when they will release first phone.

because if they dont tell this there will bo no apps ported and that means there is no apps for customers and they will never success and we also loose a great platform.

I'd expect them to use Mer tools, thus Mer SDK and all related stuff with Jolla OS image. qt mobility is available in Mer. But we'll have to wait for more details from Jolla about it. Stskeeps proposed to use Nemo with Mer SDK for now, as a prototype of development for future Jolla OS. Their final result shouldn't be too different.

If you want to start using Mer SDK now, you can take a look at:

https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Platform_SDK
https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Platform_SDK_and_SB2

It uses Scratchbox 2 (while Harmattan used Scratchbox 1). One can use OBS as well. Second link above provides examples of usage with images for N9(50)/Nemo and Vivaldi/Plasma Active. Jolla will probably provide their image so one could follow the same standard procedure. Unless they'll try to reinvent the wheel and provide their own cross compilation environments and etc.

Looking at the company registration in Finland it seems that they have also registered MeeAmp. What could that be? Amplifiers or just some software?

That was interesting. But to me it seems, judging from the date, to be just a temporary company name for whatever reasons. Maybe MeeAmp = MeeGoAmplified or whatever. Anyway, the date is just few months after the "burning platform" memo, so obviously the people behind Jolla started planning this thing quite early (which is great, of course).

One of the Jolla guys even on their IRC channel (#jollamobile on Freenode) even promised to help porting apps that run on Nemo, once their OS is released. So if you want to write applications for Jolla, making them first run on Nemo is probably really the best bet.

IIRC, they mentioned in one of their early tweets that Qt Components should be available by default.

From the interview, the point about MeeAmp has been answered:

I've seen the name MeeAmp talked about online in connection with Jolla. Is that another name for the Jolla OS?

It was a brand that someone in our company registered last year and apparently we are not using it. It was registered for other kinds of purposes and we may or may not use it but it is not relevant at the moment.

Meego will a propriety "Jolla OS" UI layer on top is acceptable to me. Hopefully Jolla won't try to lock down the device as much as Nokia did with bloatware like Aegis.
