I do have rights to the Knots folder. I ran the RunKnotsInTerminal.cmd and had VLC started before starting Knots. Here is the output:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Knots>ruby\bin\ruby.exe knots.rb

I can see 3 instances of vlc.exe *32

I did try Firefox and Safari too, same result.

I have allowed Knots in firewall as well btw. Tried with and without proxy in browser. Ran Knots as administrator too.

I ran this command too:

vlc.exe -Vdummy --intf=telnet --telnet-host=localhost --telnet-port=4212 --telnet-password=knots -vvv

But did not prompt me for any UAC and starts VLC in the task manager. Then I ran the RunKnotsInTerminal but still keeps saying "Waiting for VLC to start"

Select close server and kill all vlc instances if closing the server doesn't kill them. Then run vlc from the menu and dismiss all the dialogs it shows and close it too. Then run the RunKnotsInTerminal again and see if VLC starts properly. Be sure to close the terminal window with ctrl-c or it won't kill VLC.

I really don't know why your VLC fails to start, but this seems identical to the UAC thing that is listed in the wiki. Or you have firewall blocking access to VLC. If terminal window says VLC started properly, you are good to go. After that you should be able to start and stop the server from the menu.

If nothing helps, try closing all software firewalls on your computer if possible.

Somehow the folder image for the Artist category got deleted from the server (I was trying to add a tiff image with no luck as an album cover) - see below. When I view the Music category's subfolders from the client (N900) the artist folder has no image at all. I'd like to get it back. Can I?

Did you try going to Edit Media, then selecting the artist tag and selecting "Delete image" under Image? You can also try attaching your custom image for it, but it needs to be in jpg, gif or png format.

Another question. I have multiple folders with various incarnations of one artist. One is the artist solo and the folder is just their name, while the others have their name plus others' names. Under Collection and then Add scanned folder, Knots will only let me add the one folder with just the one artist's name. To be more clear, I have the following folders with albums inside:

Alison Kraus
Alison Kraus & The Cox Family
Alison Kraus & Union Station

Knots will only let me add one folder: Alison Kraus. None of the other folders get added nor their music inside.

Advice?

Yes, Knots is fully installed if you see the menu items. It's just a self-extracting rar package and doesn't create uninstall entry to control panel, but removing it is easy, just delete the Knots folder and the Knots 2 menu item folder and it leaves nothing to the machine.

So you didn't have any luck? Did you try without a firewall? It looks like VLC starts ok, but Knots can't access it through telnet at localhost:4212. Almost all similar problems have been caused by firewall even when people think they are not on so that's why I have to always ask. Some virus scanners act as firewalls too and I really can't help with those. Knots should work on XP/VIsta/7 32/64-bit if nothing is blocking it.
