What happened to this project?. Itīs been months with no news, no routing support for garmin. Does anyone know if there is going to be an update soon or is the project totally dead?...

Looks like upstream is still doing stuff: http://navit.svn.sourceforge.net/vie...k/navit/navit/

I can't seem to find a navit-developers list, would be interesting to hear what the plans are.

Some news for the maemo port last month :
[July 4, 2008] Thanks everybody for your emails regarding this port. I know I'm not making new packages since March, the reason for the delay is that I'm working on a new GUI to use in Maemo with focus on finger and in-car use. Also I'm waiting for routing support on libgarmin, so please be patient with this project

Great!
I'm in the middle of setup.
It would be a nice alternative to "map" application since MaemoMapper is unfortunately not usefull for me (every time I try to download a reasonable zoom - level for the whole country it asks about downloading insane amount of data (in gigabytes) - no match for vector maps - even for "map" application).

Right, well I've compiled this from the current SVN, the maps work (which is good as they didn't the last time I tried). Would someone like to donate some debianisation to the project (or even as a patch just for us)?

Next plan is to compile for the desktop and work out how the "destination" dialog is supposed to work (as it still seems to do nothing). Any thoughts from people who've used this successfully (on a tablet or a PC)?

Can I use the maps from Garmin Mobile XT with Navit GPS?

http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Garmin_maps

Apparently they must be .img maps. Does that help?

Yes, it does, greatly. Judging by the name/extension any recent Garmin-made maps for Mobile XT or PNAs should work. The 10Mb "world" map is actually included with the latest Mobile XT update files which are freely downloadable from Garmin web-site, so if you've got an app but no maps you can get a free world map from the Garmin web-site.

I tried Navit yesterday and found that, while it did display my location correctly on the OSM map I downloaded (a 30mb map .bin from OSM for my area), it really hogged the CPU and was very slow responding. I grabbed the .deb from Maemo garage, which was built using an older version of Navit than the wiki shows as the latest. Before I'd loaded the map, it was very responsive and seemed rather promising.

I was slightly put off that I could only get the GPS to display in Navit when I had the GPS location app running - if I closed that, the tablet (and Navit) lost connection to my GPS.

I'll keep my eye on this project, it has a lot of potential.

Yeah it needs some tweaking to get it to start the GPS itself.
