for word compatibility you might also want to check out AbiWord - http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...ght=openoffice
for a lighter simpler alternative (it's in the extrans-devel repository, you need to add/enable that so be careful)
and for excel - Gnumeric:

I made a 5gb partition on the eMMC for Mer / Easy Debian. I think, it's still useable (Inkscape and Kile for example, even Netbeans if you are not going to far) and ther is no big difference in speed compared to a normal installation in Maemo of adequate packages...

Go to your Application Manager, Download, System, and look for "Easy Debian". Install it. Then go to your menu, find "Deb Img Install" and run that. Be patient as the image downloads and extracts. When you have the image, then run the red diamond icon and when you have the blue swirl desktop, press the menu button in the top left. Find "office" and you should see the Open Office suite in there.

I have the same problem as pctek except that I use Ubuntu 10.04 and Openoffice.
However I have found Leafpad - in the extras catalogue, if I remember - very useful and have installed it on my laptop and my n900, which makes transfers of text files easier: I send myself an email with a text file attachment!
I found downloading and installing Openoffice on my n900 fairly easy but it is very slow, so am using Leafpad whenever it's adequate. It's certainly quick!

I'd like to know if is possible to install OpenOffice on my N900 ? I'm a new user and i'd like to install a software that i can open/edit/create word, excel files..
