Problem is that this is at a much lower resolution than the N900 handles.

Jaffa, believe me, I am iincredibly grateful My plan was to go through the thread and thank everyone when I finally get this working.
What stalled me in your instructions was that your linked-to page on how to change the PATH may have made sense to you, but it made none at all to me. It simply scared me and made me aware how out of my depth I am. I will try again (I'm on the wrong computer) with your fuller instructions. Thank you for them. Most of the problems in my understanding of this is that people start just one step further down the line than I can get with my own knowledge - and that missing step leaves me drowning.
I'd be delighted to bring my stupidity to help in any project to make this easy and straightforward, and offer my desktop (XP) and laptop (Vista) for testing/exploring. And my stupidity for you to test how basic stuff needs to be on! And even my hosting plan to provide hosting space if you wanted to create a windows version.
To whomever it was said (several pages back) that I should learn some basic code and commands - you are absolutely right... but at exactly the wrong moment. I am 4 months away from completing my current learning experience which is taking three years: I cannot simply decide to drop that this close to completion because I want to learn code instead. I have promised myself that in May, I will be doing exactly that - I've even enquired whether next year I might find an evening class at the local college. And believe me, if you guys think I'm a brainless nuisance now...
My problem is that I'm a dumb windows user: you want hardware? plug and play. You want software? D/l (or take off a cd) and in a few clicks you're done. Most of my friends would have got no further than "Open command prompt" before they'd have given up with "What's that?" Indeed, I have friends who make me go round and install any new piece of hardware or software for them - some of us really are that dumb/scared.
I am a natural Jack Russell. I will not let go of this ferret until I have defeated it. Thank you to everyone for sticking with me in my stupidity. And I promise that by whatever method I fix it, you will all get 'thanks' at the end.

Ok, I'm back.
Mucking around in the environment made me feel physically sick, but I did that bit. Unzipping tablet-encode cost me over half an hour as I don't actually have bit-zipper on any of my computers, but I got there in the end. They seem to want your first born in payment for that.
Running the command was complex - took me several shots to actually get it exactly right - but I have run it. It has output a response, the only bit of which I understand is 'be vewwy vewwy quiet'. Perhaps I can't get any further now until I can stop crying?
I never felt so utterly stupid in my life.

Were you looking to produce a Windows Wise Installer or similar? If so PING me back. If not then I might at least be able to work through your detailed instructions and give Kathy a set of screenshots to play with.
Did you click on the link which I found which tries to explain how to change your PATH? Depending on your Windows version, it'll be something like:
This is the entirety of the actions required to complete step 6.
And, as I said, if someone helped me create an installer for tablet-encode on Windows, it would be that easy. But, to date, no-one's volunteered and I didn't think it was necessary:
I resent the implication that I don't know that the steps are complex for someone inexperienced, BTW.
