Okay, just another strage Idea. I've post it originally here: Use camera for control rather than touch screen

Activate the "Sensor" with press and hold the camera button (only focus) and swipe over the camera up or down with your finger. It should be very easy to recognise such a gestue.
When you start the Mirror application from Maemo Extras, you can test it yourself. When you swipe with your finger over the whole camera the direction of the dark shadow could be very easy to recognize. Perhaps, when hopbeat and hqh have everything the could imaginate integrated and needs a new challenge they could try to integrate something like this! (but please, start with #16 before when you've got too much spare time)

@sorodoros, yes, we need a website with instructions for the app, should be up soon.
Can you check which particular option(s) gives this effect?

@Helmuth, I already though about this. Actually we could use both proximity sensor and camera to detect the swiping movement more accurately. There was also a PhD I read about, where the main camera (S60 platform it was I think) was used to recognize various gestures done with your index finger (moving the finger to the sides, to and from the camera etc.). I will post the link to the paper if I find it.

Instructions would be very helpful. Thanks.

The configurations that cause the effect for me are "backspace (browser:back)" in browser, and "menu" invoking, both enabled together.

Also an option to turn off the vibration would be nice.
Any answer to this?

@DaSilva, sorry, missed your post

Detecting which application is currently running or better brought to front is the current main 'research task'
About vibration, we have added this feature, it will appear in the next release (or you can build it from svn).

I think that the main problem with that would be battery usage.

This causes the camera to not work at all. To make it usable, the hal device would have to be automatically removed/re-added and I'm not sure if its worth the possible trouble. I want to keep things as simple and reliable as possible

Exactly. This is the reason why I have suggested to only grab the front-camera by pressing and holding the camera button down.

But, I think the only really useful thing could be to scroll fast to the top or the bottom on a webpage. Everything else is to complicated...

"... scroll fast to the top or the bottom on a webpage." I vote for for that idea!

Yes, it prevents using the key for taking a picture.

Another option is to simply kill camera-ui (with dsme -k /usr/bin/camera-ui) on staartup and camer cover close, and start it on cover open.

Great application. Sorry if this has been posted before but is it possible to tap the sensor in order to trigger the shortcuts instead of just waving my hand above it? I accidently trigger it sometimes the way it works now.
