I want make my N770 into a web cam display device.

I am stuck in a cube and it would be nice to just have the 770 on my desk with a site that just has an external shot of anything..

The problem is, even with the 770 plugged in, there is no way of not having the screen dim/turn off.

I have gone in as root and set the sleep timers to 1800 (1hr) in the
/var/lib/gconf/system/osso/dsm/display/%gconf.xml

Config file, but alas, it still does not work..

Suggestions?

Do you know what service it is that controls the sleep timer?

I've got the same problem. I'm using mediastreamer and it stops playing at the end of a song when the screen timer has come in. If I tap the display it starts again.

any help much appreciated.

This will give you a bit longer. Also search the forums a bit more as there is plenty of information about this.
Code:
gconftool -s /system/osso/dsm/display/display_blank_timeout 99999 --type int
gconftool -s /system/osso/dsm/display/display_dim_timeout 99999 --type int

thanks for the help I did eventually find this and came back to update my post only to find your reply. I did a search and found other people asking the same question with no answer. I needed to search for display timer not screen timer. also found useful hack called acmonitor.
