Just got my N800, try to play with it
. Installed Xterm, no problem. Install becomeroot, not a problem. Xterm>sudo gainroot, "password:", tried rootme, root, user, none of them work! Any suggestions?

I installed dropbear and changed the password. Why rootme is NOT the factory default password even on a brand new N800?

IIRC sudo gainroot should't require a password at all (since sudo, if configured to do so, will ask the password of the current user)

I have no idea why sudo gainroot is asking a password. Could it be Nokia lock the root when ship the N800?

Anyway I spent close to 2 hrs to go it. very upset........... BTW, I look up in the forum, it does happened to some users, but NONE posted a solution

Sounds like installation of the becomeroot package hasn't worked successfully. The root account isn't locked by default, it's the same setup as on a 770 and the default root password is rootme. There is no user password which is why you shouldn't be prompted for a password when executing sudo gainroot as user - something hasn't gone to plan when you installed becomeroot.

Mil, cannot hide things from the master! I suspect the becomeroot installation is not right. I looked up "Details", the becomeroot is made for 770. So I uninstalled it, and try to find one for the N800, no luck. I still have problem in gainroot now. It works most of the time, but not all the time(?). sometime, it said command not find, and I retyped it, and it then worked. Anyhow, I have problem with your magic script... pls go to your thread clone OS, ...a simplified.." I stucked at step 7. Thanks Mil.

The 770 version works on the n800. In fact, AFAIK, it's the only version available.

Yes, and the same one works on OS2008 too...

Every time I install new firmware I find I have to re-think (and re-search) this problem, as my memory seems to have a residual block in this matter. Usually, after I install becomeroot (which I always seem to have a hard time finding) I then type "sudo su" when in xterm as user, and it takes me instantly to root. But this is not always the case!

For some reason when you search for becomeroot at maemo.org it doesn't come up. This makes no sense to me...

Also - it's sudo gainroot

sudo su was the way you did it when you ran in RD mode on the 770.
