New N800 user; the first thing I did was to flash the OS2008 ROM. I think I may have made a big mistake :-(

I bought an N800 for one primary reason - I'm involved in auditing wireless networks, and need to run Kismet. I've been using a Sharp Zaurus, but the 2.6 kernel versions for that device are too unstable for my use and 802.11g support is nonexistant.

All my forum-searching has taught me how to set up a repository, how to use Maemo, etc. but the roadblock I've encountered is that I find things, e.g. Wireless Tools, on the OS2007 feeds that won't install in OS2008.

Am I stuck - do I need to revert to OS2007? (I hear it's slower among other things) or am I just looking in te wrong places for the software?

TIA for the help

Walt

OS2007 software that doesn't use the gui (e.g., command line programs) will run just fine in os2008. The problem is that not all such software was copied into the 2008 repositories. If you find a "mistral" or "bora" (i.e., os2007) repository that has what you want (and is a command-line app) the app will probably work. If it won't install, save the .deb file and try to install it from xterm (as root) with dpkg -i your_app.deb. don't worry, it will still show up in the application manager so that you can uninstall it if need be.

Search on gronmayer.com/it for arepository with your software.

That is often the case, yes, but not guaranteed, especially for "communications" software. I've seen at least one case (gnokii) where a command-line binary compiled for OS2008 will not install on OS2007, because of libbluetooth and libc6 issues.

- interesting... did a search on gronmayer under os2007 and os2008 using 'kismet' but nothing was found... what's the name of the client?

tia!

edit: found for os2006; however, it looks like kismet is not yet ready for prime-time on os2008? (according to what i read on the kismet page)

- wow, so i guess it's working OK? great!
