Be gentle...

So I finally took the plunge and bought a new n810 Let me lay a quick foundation for you on my background with Linux based system; None. With that said, thank god for the internet and these forums... heh. ive been able to quickly learn the general functions and messed around with xterm. After days of reading, I finally got the courage to install rdesktop.

Awesome app, I downloaded rdesktop from the maemo repository site. I believe its ver 0.4. After running once, it wouldnt open again. according to other members they also ran into this problem. So, I downloaded ver 1.5 which is xterm or cmd based (is this the right term). I am able to successfully log in to my desktop or laptop computer when using the router assigned IP i.e. 192.168.1.4
I'm using the command ; rdesk -f -u USERNAME -p PASSWORD 192.168.1.4

So now that I have successfully logged in via my wireless network. I decided to try and connect to it via my EVDO Bluetooth connection via my paired treo 700p (w/ PAM hack) and n810. I have opened the default port of 3389 (assigned by windows) via my router and assigned my public ip to it. I Believe I have everything setup correct but when I try to connect either one of two things will happen

1. It will give me an error that says ERROR: connect: No route to host

or

2. Autoselected keyboard map en-us and then just stay there...

When i rerun the command to try and connect I can see data being sent on my treo but after a couple of minutes it stops...

So my question is... Is my phone not allowing me to connect because it cannot do UDP TCP via 3389 ? or is the EVDO connection just too slow to allow a usuable rdesktop enviornment ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated... Just so you know I have not been able to try connecting via another Wireless connection not of my own... maybe I can walk the neighborhood for an unsecure connection to see if I can connect ?

Well, you said any, so I'll get the responses started for you. I must say first that I have about the same amount of experience as you do with this subject, but I find it very interesting, so I hope people will help you out and we can all learn from your thread.
My only experience with this sort of thing so far is to be able to view and control the tablet from my XP laptop. I wrote a
simple 'how to' you can find in the KDE forum called 'VNC made easy ' In that thread I mention tightVNC software for your Laptop and the fact that if you download and install KDE to your tablet you will then have x11vnc running because it was imbedded in KDE. My understanding is that both of these programs can be used either as client or server. You might enjoy KDE anyway. Quite a new level of possibilties open up with it installed.

good luck,
Neil

Neil-

Thanks for the response! I have been debating on weather or not to install KDE... Personally don't feel that comfortable just yet... Have an extra PC lying around here somewhere so I'm gonna do a clean install of UBUNTU on that, downloaded a couple of ebooks , and plan and messing with that for a couple of weeks. Once I get acquainted properly... KDE 810 here I come. Thanks for the help, i'll definitely check out that thread of yours.

Hmm, I am also new around here, and most of what you have written looks ok to me (I have never used windows remote desktop, but I have used VNC before, on both linux and windows machines, remotely).

The one thing that looks wrong- you said that you opened the port and assigned you PUBLIC IP to it - that should be your PRIVATE IP - ie, the local ip of the computer you wish to connect to (also - this computer should have a static ip on your network, or it will get messed up).

Then, in the client on your N810, use your PUBLIC IP, and the correct port, and it should work. The only problem then is keeping track of your public IP as it changes - I personally use DynDNS b/c it is free and my router has the software needed to update it built in.

If you already used the proper IP and simply made a typo, the only other thing I can think of is check that the port is correct, other than that I have no idea.
