If you upgrade to the RTCOMM beta for IM you'll be able to use IRC using the CHAT feature. One good thing about this method is it informs you when new messages arrive if logged in.

I'm using Pidgin for both IRC and AIM, works great so far. It's in the extras repository I believe.

Personally, I'd recommend against both Pidgin and rtcomm as they make fairly sub-par IRC clients. Best to go with xchat.

From using pidgin's irc support I wasn't impressed. xchat would be my recommendation as well..

I say go with X chat as well. It would be nice if someone fully hildonized it, as a lot of dialogs don't fit well or don't work quite right. For instance, when I get to the join channel dialog and I try to type in a channel to join, I can't get it to go past that point. The way to join channels is to exit that dialog and then type /j #whatever and that does the trick.
