Also why is the application manager so god damn slow? Why does it take like 2 minutes to come up with a list of installable applications? And why is it that if you accidentally click "install" and then "cancel" it takes again like 2 minutes to come up with that same fockin' list?

This app is a piece of ****.

Don't know about maemo extras, but the reason why application manager is so slow (especially when updating) is it's getting a list of apps from the different repos. However, it's doing it like other Linux systems do it, create multiple network streams and get them at the same time.

Normally this isn't a problem on a desktop, server, laptop, etc.. cause the CPU can handle it. It's usually the network interface that'd be the clog. But for the n800 it's the 400 MHZ CPU that's the clog, not the network interface.

Well, maemo-extras does seem to be the usual offender these days, much more often than third-party repos. Updates take forever or stall, ("downloading 5K..." :-) and at the end the report says maemo-extras was in error. Often a second refresh immediately after will work fine. Definitely not like it was before, and probably not normal...

Yep, all you do is cancel it and just refresh it again, ususally works the second time (if not the 3rd...)...

I see the problems with maemo extras since i bought my N800 10 months ago. Seems to be a feature, not a bug...

No problems since I reflashed.

I do use the extras catalog. (See attached image) No problems.

It may have helped that I did not restore System and Applist from my back-up.

Before the reflash I had quite some catalogs installed from Meamo or linked sites. I tried all kind of games and support programs.

I may be wrong, but quality control doesn't seem to be the best within the Meamo community. I noted that (the same) catalogs downloaded from different sources differed in content, length, time marks etc. I do not like that.

My advise:
- do not download beta’s,
- Only install from the program manager, not from the Meamo site.
- Wait until you can read from ITT that apps are stable. As an example I will not (now) install maemo mapper reading the discussions in http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=12434. I'll just wait untill this thread dies and I do read posts of succesfull installs.

Anyway I learned that the original Nokia programs do most of what is needed. To many Meamo programs do not add new functionality, but nice to have things like colors or scrolling features. Nice, but these features cost a lot of capacity form your little ITT. So I do not use them and my N800 obviously likes it and causes no problems anymore. It's a great machine now.

Abel.
