I am following these instructions:

http://maemo.org/community/wiki/howt...from_mmc_card/

I reformatted my 2 GB Kingston MMCmobile card using the instructions therein into 1 67 MB VFAT partition and the rest ext2. I also ran the initifs_flash program and thus have the boot menu. After rebooting from flash, I now am at this step:

# apt-get -d install tar

However, apt-get now wishes to remove every program I have! It says:
"The following extra packages will be installed:
openssh-common
Suggested packages:
bzip2
The following packages will be REMOVED:
base-files bluez-utils busybox ... ALL OF THE PACKAGES ON MY SYSTEM...

WARNING: The following essential packages will be removed.
This should NOT be done unless you know exactly what you are doing!
base-files busybox (due to base-files) dpkg sysvinit
...
You are about to do something potentially harmful.
To continue type in the phrase 'Yes, do as I say!'"

Is this normal? All I want to do is install tar! Any advice?

From the wiki page you linked:
The following command will generate dire warnings and prompts, requiring you to type YES. However, -d tells apt-get to only download the package and not install it, so it's safe to ignore those warnings and type YES.

# apt-get -d install tar

Thank you, that helped a bunch. Now I'm having a problem in that the tar instruction to copy my original filesystem to MMCseems to be recursively copying /opt to /opt - and thus never terminating. What could I have done wrong? I've left my 770 running for about an hour and it's copied around 220 megabytes (I believe / was originally only about 128 megabytes).
