I'm coming from the Zaurus world, where it is all but impossible to brick your device (theres a restore menu in ROM). Is it a similar deal with the N810, or do I need to be very careful flashing Angstrom/Poky/Debian/etc?

Thanks.

Well, new operating systems (debian) and desktop environments (KDE) are installed on MMC cards. You use fanoush's initfs to boot them up.

It appears that Angstrom and Poky install directly to the internal flash, to me at least. What about them?

They dont exist for Internet Tablets.

(If they did run on Internet Tablets, I'd be interested to see the link)

Then what are images/kernels doing in the downloads directories? The people on the mailing lists acknowledge that they exist for internet tablets.

It is similar but you don't have restore menu. You must flash image over USB. As long as you don't touch bootloader (or config partition) and flash only kernel, initfs, or rootfs, it is unbrickable.

I just wanted to add my Welcome from the Zaurus World. It is always nice to see another Z-person here on the IT side.

The IT is a different machine from the trusty Z. For one thing, there really is no effort to be a PDA (no calendar, todo list, sync to PC, sure you can find stuff, but not from Nokia). The wireless battery life is wonderful! On my SL6000, it was able to get 1.5 hours max, with my N800, I get 2 days or more.

There's no way to run the old trusty Z apps on the IT. There are some who are working on getting QT onto the IT, but the apps would still require recompiling (different ARM architecture, called ARMEL).

Good luck, and have fun!

Craig...

I'm hoping to stick the same OS (Angstrom) my Z has on my soon-to-arrive N810, so I can run the same apps.

Do report back how it goes; I have heard Angstrom mentioned perhaps twice in these forum, neither by anyone running it. We'd (or I'd, at any rate) like to know how it goes.
