I had always used the site as a reference for an almost perfect layout for the Internet Tablet screen resolution.

Not any more, all this has changed today
http://news.bbc.co.uk/

So much for the trend of leading web sites being optimised for handheld devices.

In fact I am not even sure that it is a good reference for any screen resolution. Personally I think the new design is an extravagant waste of screen space. However ‘room to breathe’ is the overriding mantra and, judging by the weight of favourable comments, it is here to stay.

They do have a PDA version linked from the main page, and RSS feeds. I personally only visit news sites via RSS.

I will have to go back and comment though, as I really don't like it.
I guess people have bigger screens on average now. I just felt the older one was nicer.

I never liked RSS so it is a bit of a pain.

Yes, the new site is much worse for NITs. I also noticed that the logos and masthead don't render well. Presumably this is to do with the limited number of colours that the NITs can handle.

I feel a greasemonkey script may be in order here...

Quite possibly.

However as well as the PDA version there is also a Low Graphics Version which renders perfectly.

Interesting. Worse for ITs yes; but by no means that bad. They seemed to do what ESPN did a few years ago and just hit the folks with 1024/768 screens. A fluid design would have been better; but this is good. It will be tweaked in a year though, so comments will definitely come into play.
