What exactly does that do? When I was installing mmpc, it required libglade2-0 so I sudo gainroot, apt-get install libglade2-0 but it removed osso-software-version during the install. I haven't noticed any differences yet, but I thought I would ask since it seems to show up in the IRC chat and Google when searching this forum.

Edit: Well I do notice the when idle battery time is a bit off, it reports 17 hours when my battery is at 2.6% when checked with battery-status.

Did you ever get an answer on this question? I'm running into the exact same issues after upgrading my n810 to the latest OS (had not updated the OS since Jan '08). Now running 4.2008.30-2 - and the 'apt install libglade2-0' wants to remove oss-software-version-rx44 (4.2008.30-2).

With the provious OS release everthing was installed my the .deb files - or at least I don't recall such messages when I installed mmpc before.

Start with a google search. There's lots on the subject.

In summary, osso-software-version-rx*4 is a meta-package for everything that makes up Maemo. Uninstalling it means no more SSU updates.
