I've been at the airport where there is free wifi and get this odd connection icon with a dot above it. I open a new browser, google loads, then the N810 tells me I'm not connected to the internet, even though it told me before i was connected. I've had this problem before....what on earth does that dot mean? Ad-hoc? and if so, what does Ad-HOC mean and why can't I access the internet when its a free public access point? Thanks in advance!!!

It's an Ad-Hoc connection. Basically this way you can connect two computers without needing an AP. Obviously in this case you don't have an internet connection. Most likely the other computer isn't connected to the internet, too.

Probably if the other computer is connected to the internat AND has setup routing properly (Internet connection sharing or whatever it's called in Windows) you also would have an internet connection.

If the access point is called 'Free Public WiFi' or some such then it's one of those somewhat benevolent Windows semi-viruses. It's not something you should connect to.
